Milwaukee LGBT Center Money problems

Why am I not surprised that the LGBT Center has lost over $77,522 ? We do know that parking sucks even after 6PM, so what else has caused this gigantic loss? Could it be that the cost per Square Foot is too much? Or is it a combination of the two? Boys and Girls you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this one out. Face it, it is a terrible location. Like I said in my blog a few stories down, welcome to the School of Hard Knocks. Just like the failed Visioning Project, its always a bunch of community leaders with gigantic egos who think they know whats best for the community. NOT

The truth is that the space is too expensive and the parking is lousy. We're in a recession, remember? Besides who wants to park two blocks away and deal with all the drunk and rowdy college kids? You have to walk at least a block or two from the nearest bus stop. Don't expect many disabled people to drop in either. This is just east of the entertainment district (lots of bars, performing arts center, Pabst theatre). Project Q may not care, but the rest of us do. Too bad "I Told you so."

Just today the county Exec wants to slash several million dollars from the budget. I think grants are going to be hard to come by unless the economy picks up. That is not going to happen any time soon, you can bank on that. Don't even get me started with Obama's jobs program.

SAGE Milwaukee is so screwed
The SAGE Milwaukee web site is down and guess who owns it? You guessed it, the terminated executive director. He said an Angel ran it and I think I know who that is also. Its a shame that he worked his ass off to build it up and some idiot with a tremendous ego comes along and screws it all up. Congratulations, Board of Directors, you really screwed it up this time. Tell me this, why is it that various people who work their asses off to produce things for our community are eventually screwed by the very people they are trying to help? Taking into consideration the Peter principle or some people have reached their level of incompetence, many others, too many to mention and been horribly screwed over by some narcissistic egomaniacs who think that they know better than anyone else how to run our community, when in fact they don't.

I been around long enough to see organizations destroyed because of the actions of a few because they let their overinflated egos get the better of them. I've seen it with car clubs, I've seen that pride Fest, I've seen it at the Milwaukee Metropolitan community Church, I've seen it happen to LAMM, and now once again I'm seeing it happen at SAGE Milwaukee. And the thing I've noticed the most is the apathy within our community and the cowardliness of the gay press to cover any of it. If anyone thinks I enjoy this, I don't. It is however I believe my duty to expose the sayings and to bring it to the attention of our community, mainly because and I don't know why, I care about it. There are times when I wonder why I'm wasting my time, when I'd like to raise my hands in frustration and turnaround and walk away from everything. Truth be told I cannot do that and that is why I do what I do. Like it or not, somebody has to do it. It makes me mad as hell, and should you too.

Salvation Army Kettle Time Again

I don't think I have to remind anyone that this is a very homophobic organization. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, the Salvation Army's position statement on homosexuality has not changed one iota. Most of their scriptures stated in their position statement had been misinterpreted. The 1611 King James version of the Bible and the interlinear Greek English translation and Tanakh commonly known as the Jewish Bible or Torah believe that by our Jewish brethren to be the most accurate translation of the Bible does not contain the word homosexuality in any shape manner or form. Nowhere in the new testament is homosexuality mentioned. Most of the Old Testament talks about man's inhumanity to man in this story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Romans 1:26-27 actually talks about prostitution and not homosexuality or homosexual acts.

Some of the places that the red kettle campaign is located is the Bayshore Mall, Pick & Save (Bay Shore Mall management office telephone number is 332-8136, Chris Jaeter is the general Manager) and Stein's gardens and gifts. Needless to say if you are so moved it is my recommendation that we file complaints with these businesses demanding that they remove these red kettles from their premises. In the meantime stay tuned because there will be more to follow on this blog.

Here some thoughts concerning Milwaukee MCC

Last Sunday because of my curiosity concerning the ministerial committees I wanted to see if anything changed. The two committees I was interested in were the Technology Committee and the Pastoral Committee. Needless to say I was vastly disappointed with the Technology committee for the following reasons.
The person or persons controlling the websites for the church insist upon using a web authoring tool that is extremely complicated and expensive. I believe this is to ensure that they will be the only ones capable of creating and updating the church's websites.
They have ownership of and control of the domains also assuring that no one will be able to access the websites.
There were several hearing-impaired individuals who are interested in making sermons accessible. Ideas concerning videos were summarily rejected.
In order for people to come back to the website time and time again (weekly) it needs to be changed and updated on a regular basis if that does not happen that is very unlikely that they will ever come back after the very first time. Nothing has changed on either one of the websites and some things should be completely eliminated or deleted from these websites in order for the church to move forwards.
I was also upset by the ministerial committee choosing music for weekly services. A good homilist chooses music appropriate to the homily or sermon. They do not allow anyone else to do this. This caused me to wonder how far in advance the minister prepares the sermons?
Concerning the communion I have several concerns. I understand that you may want to contemporize communion however some people believe that it has been watered down and lost its magic. The magic of communion is this trans-substantiation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. The act of consuming these two items represents a forgiveness of sins, nothing more and nothing less. Now if new people to the church are not familiar with this, then I think it should be part of the membership class. Although different churches do not use the traditional wafers the bread should always be the same. Authenticity is good but Hawaiian bread just doesn't cut it.
Unfortunately the Milwaukee Metropolitan community Church will never grow if things don't change. I realize that you have your own style of effecting change, however that has not happened given the amount of time you have been minister of this church. I think that you need to take a stronger leadership position and insist the stagnant leaders step down and allow fresh blood to replace and revitalize these committees. You must accept the fact that some people will be extremely upset when this happens and some may quit the church entirely. Sometimes change is not always pleasant but necessary. In some circles we call it getting rid of deadwood.
There are times when I take the Devils Advocate position to force people to think and do things they otherwise would not do. I hope that people get mad then perhaps good things will happen. And although I am not a member nor do I intend to rejoin, for some reason I care about the church. I have had many pleasant memories with the church.

There is a method to my madness and always a reason for what I do.

I really hate to keep on harping about the issue but I just keep wondering what they were thinking of when the signed contract for the new LGB T Ctr. at 252 E. Highland St.? The only thing I can come up with was that they were just looking at the building in the interior and nothing else. No I can't say that the interior isn't fabulous because I really haven't seen it yet, but I am very concerned about parking and especially disabled access to the building, that being the lack of spaces for disabled parking and the appropriate and necessary sidewalk improvements. Not to mention parking in general for those people and especially groups who want to use the building.

I would strongly suggest you drive by the building and pull into what is called Market Street which happens to be a private alley which leads to a private parking garage and not public parking. And if you really want to amuse yourself as you're driving into Market Street carefully read the signs on the east side of the street. You will also note that there is a no parking sign by the City of Milwaukee facing in the wrong direction on the same side of the street. As you read this sign you will notice that there are surveillance cameras overlooking these parking spaces indicating that anyone who is not a tenant will be ticketed and towed. On the front of the building, on Highland Street again all parking in that area is metered parking. Let us not forget that directly across the street is the Milwaukee School of Engineering whose students during season tend to take up every available parking space. Kitty corner from the new LGB T Ctr. is the 1000 N. Water St. structure with eight floors of available parking, access is from the East but in order to exit you must exit from the West or you can walk down the steep incline or take eight stories worth of stairs to exit to the East. Monthly parking for this garage is approximately $100 per month and daily parking is usually about eight dollars a day if you enter before 8 AM and leave before 5 PM. All parking is automated with no attendance available.

The problem is, I have confronted to both Maggie Cage and the operations manager Dave Martin to the LGB T Ctr. and they are notoriously quiet about what is going on with the new facilities. Upon publishing the several articles such as this one I still get no response. Even the gay newspapers the Quest and the Wisconsin Gazette have failed to make any mentions concerning these problems with the new LGB T Ctr. Apparently they are only interested in politics, suicides and entertainment and not much else.

I'm afraid this is going to be one of those "I told you so" stories. Too bad everyone it is turning a deaf ear because unfortunately they have to learn the hard way, so I guess I have to say welcome to the School of Hard Knocks. It's really too bad too because they are past the point of no return and there is no way of getting out of their contract at this point in time. The idea was good but the planning sucks. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Such is life.

The reasons for my journalism

Contrary to popular belief I do not like to stir up controversy. As a journalist and semi-professional photographer ( now learning vidiography) I believe it is my duty when I am made aware of the goings on in our community that may be detrimental that those responsible be held responsible. Publicly exposing possible alleged wrong doing is necessary in order to maintain a healthy LGBT community.

It is unfortunate that the local gay media only concentrates on (besides our current political climate IE. domestic partner and DADT) only the Good News and buries its head in the sand on important issues concerning the egotistical and narcissistic proclivities of its leaders. We must remember that we elected or appointed them as spokesmen and mentors for the organizations they are responsible for. The problem is that Power sometimes goes to their heads and bad things can be the result. Truth be told, many people can not handle Power and that is the reason that we must hold them responsible for their actions.

A prime example comes to mind the New LGBT Center 252 E. Highland St. where there is almost no adequate parking (unless you want to pay a premium to a parking garage) not to mention Disabled Parking or ADA access (yes there is a ramp to the doorway but no marked vehicular space for access front or back) to the building. If my memory serves me right, if more than 30% of the interior of the building is remodeled the rest of it must also be made ADA compliant.

There is virtually no parking on the street nor any marked Disabled parking near the entrance. When MSOE in in session, forget it. Forget about Friday or Saturday evening when all the Bars a block away are loaded with people, not to mention the parking situation. No Gay person in his right mind will want to be there then. I aught to know as an assistant nighttime patrol supervisor I had to patrol that area and can relate first hand what goes on.

Things you didn't know about that new LGB T community center

As you know the LGBT community center is moving from court street. Some of you have gone to the hardhat party and have seen the interior of the building with work in progress. Unfortunately I was not able to go because of these spinal injury and because I was in the hospital getting a pacemaker. Now if you Google the address for the new LGBT Ctr. you can look at it from several angles. The new LGBT Ctr. will be located at 252 E. Highland Ave. directly across some Milwaukee school of engineering and kitty corner from one of those large major garages. The problem is I am very concerned about access to the building and A.D.A. compliance inside the building. Upon speaking with one of the representatives of the old LGBT Ctr. I was informed that instead of using the door on the Highland Avenue side they door around the corner would be used for entry and exit. I was also informed that the upstairs or I should say the second floor will be ADA compliant. According to the specifications when it a building is upgraded more than 35% that all of the building must be ADA compliant. Not just a portion of it.
For the past two years I was a assistant patrol supervisor patrolling four major garages in the downtown Milwaukee area specifically one West and South nearby or should I say kitty corner from the new LGBT Ctr. I can tell you specifically that there is no exit from this building other than from the South side of the building or the Westside from the Performing Arts Center and from the East a very steep ramp. To the east of the new center is the Milwaukee school of engineering parking lot. MSOE does not allow anyone except students to park in a parking lot and if you do you will get ticketed and towed. Most of the parking around MSOE is metered parking and there is very seldom a space available. I was informed that there would be parking on the side of the building apparently where the new entryway is located. I will we have to buzz to get into this one too? I Assume several of these spots will be for disabled parking. The street is basically a cul-de-sac and there is very little parking available.

I was informed that the center has negotiated private parking within one of the structures nearby the center. Exactly who is going to use these parking spaces is a good question. What I don't think anybody realizes is that these negotiated spaces will be used by people who run the center. This eliminates the cost of parking downtown and allows these people access to almost everything downtown (no more meters to plug remember?) because according to them it's all within walking distance. (surprise surprise)Most parking downtown cost no less than $100 per month, and don't even mention those god-awful parking meters something I don't think these people are going to have to pay for ever. This is one of the perks that you and I are going to be paying for through our donations, believe it or not. Where the funding is going to come from for these costly parking spaces is a very good question. And my question is should we be footing the bill for this parking through our donations?

The last thing I would like to point out is that parking in that area is a premium because it is within a block or so of at least 20 bars which are packed solid Friday and Saturday evenings. And I don't know of too many gay people who were going to want to be around during during that time when there are hundreds of rowdy college students in the area. Believe me I know because I had to kick a lot of them out of the garages and break up fights and other stuff like that at closing time. On summer nights the police would cordon off the area and he only way you could go was home. So there you have it, a place I would consider not a very good (think lousy) location with very limited parking and very few answers forthcoming.

Have you heard the LGBT center is moving?

I am sorry but I have a big problem with that. Actually I have several problems with it. First of all they are moving into an office building across the street from MSOE, 1000 N. Water St. with its attendant parking garage which I am afraid to say does not comply with accommodations for people who are disabled. Not only that but the parking lot east of the building cannot be used for parking because it is part of the Milwaukee school of engineering and they don't allow anyone to park there unless you are a student and have a valid MS O E. parking permit which I am sure none of us will be able to get. I spoke with Patrick Price and Maggie Cage on the telephone and he/she indicated that the first floor was going to be used for for LGB T. group's and project Q. the second floor which he indicated contains the mezzanine will be used by the Galano Club. And from what I can see looking at Google maps using their street view that the third floor will be used for offices for those running it the LGB T. Center.

One of my biggest problems number one is where the building is located, right smack dab in the middle of the entertainment district. You know the area where the performing arts Center is located and about 20 bars frequented by college types FRiday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Needless to say parking is still a premium. Metered parking is available on the street and at night for free if you can find a parking place. And they indicated that they had negotiated parking spaces with a nearby condominium development. Unfortunately these parking spaces do not comply with the Americans with disabilities act because there are no parking places within a reasonable distance of the entrance to the new center. Once again this building is also on a slight decline, or incline whichever you prefer making it difficult for anyone in a wheelchair to access the front door of the building. The bottom casement of the front door is not even with the cement sidewalk and therefore making it difficult for someone in a wheelchair to enter the building.

Unless you are part of the aging LGB T. community these inconsistencies become a very big problem when it is very difficult for you to negotiate, walk or use a wheelchair to get around. As far as I can see there are no disabled parking spaces nearby. There are also no buses within a reasonable distance of this new center. For this reason many of us will probably never visit the new center. Now if you would like to take the two-hour hardhat tour of the building in June, please be my guest. Anyway I would strongly suggest that anyone should check this out and let our leaders know what you think. Now I know one of the arguments they are going to make is that they want to be accessible to the kids who use project Q., but I ask you how many of these kids live close to the LGBT. Center? Inquiring minds would like to know. Maybe it's time that we form our own LGB T. Tea Party. Just a thought.

Why we don't need to celebrate our relationships at pridefest

If we read in gay history we find that prior to stonewall in 1969 and in prior-years being gay was considered by most people to be an aberration and was unfortunately classified as a psychological problem necessitating institutionalization and some of the most horrific therapies. We were considered to be sexual deviants subject of police raids and incarceration. Then in 1969 something happened at the stonewall inn in New York City with a bunch of female impersonators decided they weren't going to take it anymore, and the riots began and the rest is history.
Years later after the American psychiatric Association dropped homosexuality from the DSM 4 book of diagnostic criteria did we finally decide to celebrate who we are throughout the United States with gay pride celebrations. Somewhere during this time many GL BT individuals and organizations also wanted to celebrate our love for one another and our desire as same-sex couples to protest the laws restricting us from our God-given right to marriage. As a way of publicly protesting many organizations including pridefest decided to hold mass wedding ceremonies as our way to bring our plight to light.

In the meantime many individuals and organizations were pushing within the political arena within many of our capital cities and governmental agencies to push for the right to marry. This in turn caused a backlash within the organized religious communities who collectively worked to ban gay marriage through constitutional amendments starting with Hawaii and continuing across the United States until almost every state banned gay marriage. Although many gay organizations are working to over turn constitutional amendments we still cannot legally marry or be recognized as married couple where we live.

Here in Wisconsin state's constitution has been amended to ban gay marriage. The state and its municipalities no longer recognize a gay marriage. Prior to the state constitution being amended many gay people participated in mass marriage ceremonies at pridefest. After the constitutional amendment was passed a celebration of Mass. marriages celebrated at pridefest dropped dramatically from well over 100 to less than 10. Each year the number had dropped off. As an ordained minister and Deacon for the MCC it has always been my belief that we do not need the government's blessing. If we need anything from the government we can either get it from domestic partnerships or through legal documentation from gay friendly lawyers. It has also been very strongly my belief that a celebration of our partnerships and or commitments are between us and God and not the government. Therefore I highly recommend that we seek out our favorite church to privately celebrate our commitment. We really don't need to do it during the carnival atmosphere of pridefest.

Pants on the floor or your head up your ass?

American Idol song of "Pants on the ground" has really become a hit, but why do some people (pardon my French) walk around with their heads up their asses? Is it just the way they are or are they just plain dumb as hell? Now I've heard arguments for and against questioning someone's credentials. In case of ministers there are two schools of thought. Older ministers especially those from the Bible Belt who were brought up at a very young age preaching the gospel tent meetings will quote the Bible specifically John chapter 15 verse 16 "yet not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain that whatsoever ye shall ask a the father in my name, he may give it you."To validate their credentials of ministry. They sincerely believe that God called them to preach and Shepherd the masses. As we approach the 21st century the call to ministry has changed. People nowadays are much better educated and no longer accept the biblical verses quoted by old-time preachers as validity for the call to preach or being the leader of the church or other religious organization. In order to provide the liturgy and to be ordained as clergy we now insist that that person meets certain educational requirements. Ordination only occurs after satisfactory completion of the curriculum in seminary.
Unfortunately in our society in this day and age there are many dishonest people. Therefore the requirements that a person completes a religious course in seminary has become mandatory. Any person claiming to be a minister would be required to produce some sort of the diploma or other proof of training before they can be ordained by their chosen faith or religious organization. Refusal to do so of course would be reason to refuse any application to any religious order organization.
And although there may be many sincere individuals who would like to become ministers in their chosen faith lack of education and psychological evaluation has become necessary in over to prevent any bad things from happening or anyone with a criminal or psychological impairment from being allowed to practice. I cite the current problems within the Catholic Church with many priests who have not been psychologically evaluated leading to rampant pedophilia within the church's clergy. Unfortunately some people are not psychologically qualified to serve as ministers or clergy. There are also other problems which can and do occur from the self proclaimed clergy concerning the monetary abuse of state and federal tax laws. Unfortunately there are people who abuse the process for their own inurement therefore violating the tax code.
I am not the only one who has challenged certain individuals credentials of ministry. Most of those I have asked have no problem providing proof. Others on the other hand have chosen to not produce evidence here pertain to their ordination or the corporate status of their church as a religious organization as defined by IR code 501(c)(3). It is my personal opinion that anyone who bocks at producing credentials of ministry or organizational information should be in my opinion suspect. Dealing with that organization would be at your own risk.

Rainbow Community Picnic

The rainbow community picnic

Saturday, July 18 was a beautiful day to have a picnic. This was a day the rainbow community picnic was held behind the community center at Washington Park. Placing the picnic area behind the community center allowed for easy access for those with disabilities. The area directly behind the center was paved along with a concrete walk parallel to the picnic area which itself was essentially flat. This year plastic lawn chairs were put out for people to sit in along with maybe about four canvas chairs. You know the ones that once you get into you have a heck of a time getting out of. I should know I own one of them, but I don't use it very often. Picnic a tables were set up in several rows with tents covering all of them in case mother nature should decide to sprinkle on us. The weather cooperated and the temperature was perfect with very little breeze. There were the usual hot dogs and hamburgers, sausages and brat worst and veggie burgers and every kind of salad you could think of and then some. Dessert consisted of pies and cakes and cookies of every description. Enough I believe to feed an army. Conservatively my estimate of the number of people was at least 75 and perhaps more. The youngest person there was one year old and the oldest was 94. Games were set up for the kids consisting of balls on strings that would be tossed onto a stand made of plastic tubing. My guess is that the person who was able to get the most balls onto the stand would be winner. So if you didn't go you missed a wonderful time great food and great people.

When two officers were shot yesterday in front of two gay bars on the south side. And don't tell me you were too busy to come down here along with the chief of police the mayor in the district attorney. Why is it so hard to show up in person rather than issuing a written statement which to us means nothing other than the fact that you don't care about what happens in this neighborhood.

Why isn't Mr. Witkowiak out there asking the common Council for additional resources for the addition of funds in his district which is impacted by an excessive amount of violence? In my opinion you are not doing the job you are elected to do and if it were up to me you would never be elected again. So let's stop sitting on our butts and get going and do something about what's happening. I talked to a person in your office who said that this was only an isolated incident and not to worry about it. What kind of response is that? It's obvious to me that you and the people your office don't care about what's going on in your district, and you should. Shame on you Mr. Witkowiak and shame on the people in your office and especially you at this important time for not showing up in person.

Please answer one more last question. Why does this chief of police and the mayor of Milwaukee have to be the ones that are doing the job that you should be doing? After all you're supposed to be a spokesman for this district.

Announcing pridefest celebration of our commitments

Things are changing at pridefest this year. Gone is the mass marriage ceremony instead in its place is a ceremony honoring our relationships. As we all are aware constitutional amendments were made several years ago preventing us from celebrating the institutional churches monopoly on marriage. And although we have made strides in various states throughout the union that are now recognizing gay marriage but we still have a long way to go. I personally don't believe in the institution of marriage, it is antiquated, it is restrictive and no longer relevant. Way back when I was on the board of Action Wisconsin I said that if we wanted marriage we must first get Domestic Partnerships and once we get our foot in the door then and only then do we go after the institution of marriage, because by then we will have gotten 99% of the benefits that marriage offers. We must also remember that marriage or the institution thereof is between ourselves and God and not between us and the government. Apparently most of us have forgotten that or ignored it at the worst. I know that many of you will disagree with my sentiments but unfortunately it is the truth.

I'm back

After being out of work stuck at home since last October my doctor just released me so now I'm back and will be covering events as they happen in our community. A couple of discs in my neck went bad and I had temporarily lost feeling in my left hand and left foot and some in my right hand and right foot which is now all but disappeared. You can't imagine how pinched nerves in your spinal column can mess you up. Now everything is back to normal I've gained a lot of my strength back minus a few creaks and groans that is inevitable as we grow older. You can bet I will be a pridefest taking pictures and covering the general shindig. With the weather gradually getting warmer, mom nature hopefully cooperating and giving us good weather should be a very enjoyable time.

I've been on pridefest mailing list and it looks to me like instead of fireworks we will instead have entertainment from a troop out West comprising tricks involving fire which, correct me if I'm wrong may have been inspired by the annual gathering at Burning Man in the desert. Another change is that the mass commitment ceremony has now morphed into a ceremony honoring each other. Religious officials I am told will still be offering private commitment ceremonies. And I'm sure that private church ceremonies can be arranged through various religious organizations who have booths at pridefest. Beyond that there will be lots of entertainment things to do with the kids lots of vendors, good stuff to eat, plenty of libation, lots of people and lots of fun.

Well I guess that's about it for now, so keep tuned and if anything pops up I'll let you know.

Milwaukee LGB T. Center panics

Just a note for curiosity sake the swine flu scare has not only affected Milwaukee public schools but also our LGB T. Community Center. On May 2 apparently somebody got sick and they all panicked. The police and paramedics were called and the center was closed for the evening just in case it might be the flu. So for all those of you who had some sort of meeting at the community center I guess you would say it was just a false alarm.
In case you don't know or haven't seen the news CDC has issued a statement concerning the swine flu indicating that the current strain is a mild one similar to the flu strains that we normally see during flu season. They still are however studying the current strain and preparing vaccines for the fall just in case it comes back with a vengeance. Just remember to frequently wash your hands and if at all possible use a hand sanitizer just to be on the safe side. Try to stay away from anyone who may be coughing or exhibits any type of flu like symptoms. Cover your mouth and if you must cough and you don't have many tissue instead of coughing into your hand you should use the inside of your elbow instead. And of course if you don't have to go out or be in large crowds don't. Instead of going to the movies or to a show rent a flick, pop some popcorn and enjoy.

I know this blog has been silent for a while, you see I had spinal surgery

and now I'm back and posting again and should be out and about shortly. As soon as my car gets a tuneup and you'll see me around in the community. I recused myself from the job that I had so now I have all the time in the world to be out about. Okay I know are really just want to know what happened to me so I guess it's about time I tell everybody. Many of you know that I have been working security for ages as a licensed security officer. I patrolled four major garages in the downtown area of Milwaukee, specifically some of the garages around the water St. entertainment district. I've dealt with homeless people, drunks, car thieves and even a major homicide across from the performing arts Center last May. To make a long story short, while I was patrolling around some of the garages I noticed that my left hand was becoming numb and so wasn't my left foot which I did not think was right, so I went to the doctor and after a number of tests they found that I had several deteriorated discs in my neck which needed to be operated upon before anything got worse. Needless to say the operation was successful and I have been home recuperating, and now that it is getting warmer and I plan to get out of the house and get back into the swing of things.

Now to the meat of this article. One of the big reasons you very seldom see me out at the bars on the weekends especially during the winter is because of the cigarette smoke. If no one is smoking it's okay but if they are it tends to bother me quite a bit. I usually come in, look round see if I can find somebody I know and if no one I know is there I turn around and exit. I know the bar owners don't like it because they'd rather have me stay and buy A few drinks to keep them in business. I have enough health problems without having to compound the problems by breathing in everyone else's toxic gases.

Believe me I know what smoking can do to a person. I used to know a person who used to smoke about three packages of cigarettes a day. Previously he had pneumonia and before he quit he sounded like the demon in the exorcist (you know the book by William Peter Blatty). One day as he swung his legs to the floor upon waking up, he couldn't catch his breath. He decided at this time that he should quit smoking and he did. It's fortunate that he did because to this day he hasn't had any problems with his lungs. My mother on the other hand has smoked since she was a child, but she died of cancer. The agony that my father and I went through watching her slow deterioration and knowing that we could do absolutely nothing is something I never wish on anybody. So I hope this is a wake-up call for the gay community. A grim reminder that 1200 people a day die due to cigarette smoking and lung cancer. And as a sidenote it's not just cancer but emphysema which can kill you too. With the cost of cigarettes now exceeding five dollars a package, don't you think it's a good time to quit? Just think of how much money you could save at one package a day at five dollars a package, comes a $35 a week or $175 a month. If you go through three packs a day that's $15 and in one week it comes to $105 or $525 a month. And just think in one year you it's been $6300 to feed your habit. I don't know about you but that was sure pay for a nice trip down to Key West or even Palm Springs. How about it? Don't you think it's time to quit?

Just the other day Alaska Gov. Palan's church was gutted by fire of suspicious origin. Several women that were inside the church making ornaments apparently for Christmas when the fire started near the very front of the church. No one was hurt because the fire alarm sounded allowing everyone to exit the building. Authorities suspect that it may have been arson. Although this is only speculation and has not been proven and no one has been caught. They suspect arson because of Gov. Palin's anti-homosexual viewpoints and because of her church's involvement with the American family Association in sponsoring a program aimed at people who may be uncomfortable with their homosexuality claiming that they may be able to change.

Although I try not to be very biased I do think that this was purposefully set and it seems to be quite a coincidence especially as this is approaching the Christmas season. It may also be a backlash from the outcome of California's passage of proposition eight. And although I don't like the idea of violence, American history has been written in blood and violence. When the British came over and tried to take over the New World and tried to make us their colonies we went to war with the British and succeeded from the British Empire. Later on when people from the South wanted to split the United States in half we had the Civil War and much blood was spilled. Among these things we also had minor skirmishes such as the protests by women to become equal citizens and gain the rights of voting. African-American people had the likes of Martin Luther King said I have a dream and they were rioting in the streets and bloodshed until they gain equal rights. Gay people got sick and tired of being arrested and punished and beat up by the police and rioted in what is now called 1969 Stonewall riots. We told them then that we were not going to take it anymore and that we were going to fight back. The latest problems that we now face are against those we love to whom we would like to marry. Of course my question is, will the passage of proposition eight in California lead to bloodshed and riots similar to Stonewall or perhaps worse? Only time will tell.

News flash QLife magazine ceases publication

For all of you who may not know, but now you do QLife magazine has as of December 1 ceased publication. As of this date I have decided to resurrect the Wisconsin light online as a source of news and information as it happens. Because many of us do not get the newspaper or can get out to the bars to pick up our gay publications is my decision to start an online publication for your edification. Any business or any person wanting to publish information about their business, their bar or other publication or has any type of articles they would like to publish on the Wisconsin light online I would be happy to receive those articles and then be able to publish them on either this blog or the Wisconsin light online. Wisconsin light online has been established to create a news outlet where I intend to be as accurate and un-opinionated as possible. I can't claim that on Gary's dish. Of course that's why Gary's dish exists so that I can express my opinions anyway I see fit.

I just had a very long talk with a friend of mine about the protests due to the passage of proposition eight and the involvement of the Mormon church has had in promoting its passage. My friend was very upset with this and thought that this was very hypocritical of the gay community. I confess I really wasn't aware of this until he pointed it out. He believes that anyone should be able to express her opinion publicly if necessary without it being called hate speech. Personally I think that the gay community is looking for a scapegoat because they were not able to overturn proposition eight.

Here in Wisconsin when Action Wisconsin was first formed I was privileged to be on its board of directors and was able to voice my opinion on gay-rights issues within our state. Prior to this time gays and lesbians in Wisconsin were looking to get their foot in the door and trying to get partner benefits past in major metropolitan areas such as Milwaukee and Madison. After some struggle we were able to get some of these domestic partnership benefits passed both in the Milwaukee and Madison, but not as many as we would have liked. Many gays and lesbians within the state of Wisconsin were not happy with this and were claiming that we were second class citizens and that we should have full equal rights under the laws. They believed that getting partnership benefits would be one of the first steps to us getting our foot in the door for full inclusion. Some, I believe decided to rush headlong into the fray and push for all the rights under the law that heterosexual marriage would give and therefore supposedly give us equal status and full inclusion along with the government's blessing. Unfortunately I tried to point out to them that going for complete inclusion via marriage would be stirring up a hornets nest with the religious right. Instead they did not want to listen and went forward with their quest for complete inclusion and equal rights under marriage.

How wrong they could be. Indeed they did stir up a hornets nest within the religious communities and the likes we have never seen. The faith based community staunchly held the belief that marriage should only be between one man and one woman, not two men or two women. The gay and lesbian community spent thousands and possibly millions of dollars beinging their cases to court in order to force states to recognize gay marriage. Faith based communities including the religious right became incensed at this and worked feverishly to change the constitution to ban gay marriage, which for the most part was successful. Not only do we lose the right to gay marriage but also the constitutions and laws of the states of the United States were changed to prohibit gay marriage saying that only one man and one woman can be considered in the process of marriage. Now in 2008 comes a presidential election along with proposition eight in California which would ban gay marriage within that state. Many churches including the Mormon church encouraged their members to get out the vote in order to get proposition eight passed, which of course it did, and now the gay community is looking for a scapegoat to blame because of their failure to overturn this referendum.

Personally I do not see what all the fuss is all about because I for one do not want anything to do with heterosexual marriage in any shape manner or form. I don't like the idea of being homogenized into society and having anyone including gays and lesbians telling me that we are just like them. On the contrary we are not just like them and we never will be. This is one of the reasons why I am against marriage, because it is so much a part of the greater heterosexual community. I am not and never have been a second class citizen and no one is going to tell me anything different. As far as I am concerned I am a sovereign individual and I do not need the blessing of the government to be bestowed upon myself or my partner should we decide to enter into a state of matrimony. I only answer to one law and that law comes from God and not from some government. Should I ever find a partner I definitely want the blessings of the church to be bestowed upon us, but I do not want the government to intervene in any shape manner or form. The only things I want are basic benefits afforded to myself and my partner such as hospital visitation and the right of my partner to inherit whatever I so choose when I pass on. And as far as I'm concerned everything else is gravy. Like a bumper sticker I used to have on my car which said "God bless the IRS, if it wasn't for them I'd be filthy rich." I don't know about you but I think this whole thing is just a little stupid. Any thoughts that you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Preliminary report on pridefest financials

As you know I asked Scott Gunkel, the president of pridefest for his take on what was going on with the financial situation with pridefest. I received an e-mail from him which I am attaching it to this blog for your edification. I was concerned because of all the stuff that had been going on this past season with pridefest especially with all the protesters and bad weather that they had. I was very concerned about how they were doing and I thought that you should know also. The only response we got after pridefest was a very small article in the gay newspapers assuring us that everything was okay, or at least that's what they wanted us to think. After that there was dead silence. This silence seemed to me to be kind of foreboding. As many of you know I have been a landlord for well over 30 years and one of the things I stress with my tenants is communication. If there is a problem I would like you to tell me about it so that we can work it out. I have gotten to the point that when people do not communicate I take that as a very bad sign that something is not right and I am usually forced to become proactive to find out what the problem is and correct it as necessary. I hate to say it, but the same situation as cropped up with pridefest because they have failed to communicate with the community at large I take this, or least took it as a bad sign. As a reporter I thought that it was necessary that I find out what was going on good or bad. Being the eternal optimist that I am I was hoping that the news would be good. I have provided the e-mail Mr. gunkel sent to me for your consideration. In my estimation it does look somewhat good and I am hoping that once the dust settles and Milwaukee world Festival's bill is presented to pridefest that everything will balance out. Let's just hope next year is better than the last one.

You definitely can't say I sugar coat the news. Please find below his response to me, and my original request to him. The sequence of letters is a little backwards , because the first request is at the bottom and the answer is up above. You may have to go all the way down to the bottom and work your way up to get the gist of it, such that it is. Take it for what it's worth.

Your tone seems rather harsh and disparaging, and while I am not a master of retoric, I will give you the same information that was sent to all newspapers.

PrideFest does not list detailed annual reports on the website, and we have yet to have a detailed audit for this year endiing in August.
PrideFest is scheduling that to happen in October, the earliest that we have ever been ablt to arrange for our audit.

While PrideFest is very excited that our financial sponsorship is up more than 50%, and that our "in Kind" support is up more than 200%; also our Market Place vendors rented more spaces from us than ever before. Plus our Pre-sale tickets raised more than 2 1/2 times what last years did (much of that was due to the reserved seating section that we developed this year). With all that said, sadly I must report that PrideFest took a loss of around $16,500.00. This figure was only announced after we recieved and paid all the final bills outstanding, which unfornuatly takes time to arrive; Milwaukee World Festivals (MWF) send out our billing after they finish operating Summerfest; in the past that has been in late October. So while some preceive that we are stalling in making our final numbers known, it is due to the late arrival of our MWF billing.

PrideFest still had financial reserves in access of $110,000.00 and is in a strong position for next years Festival. There will be no call for emergency help out of PrideFest. Overall, PrideFest is happy with the final results. As you made mention of past issues, PrideFest's management of the financials has kept PrideFest in a strong position despite the terrible weather this years Festival had.

Let me also remind you that PrideFest is now and has been since the 2004 re-building, a all volunteer organization. Before 2004, some of the people who worked at prideFest were paid,I guess the fact that the community was not informed of such (and many other things)made the community less than trusting of PrideFest. While we hope someday to build PrideFest up strong enough to hire staff, that will not happen in the near future. When it does, PrideFest will proudly announce it to the media.
All of us who work on PrideFest do so as volunteers, and deserve the respect of the community for the work we do all year round to develop this event and organization.

Okay pridefest has been long over since the beginning of June. A little ways down you'll notice that I asked about what is happening with pridefest. We were assured that once the dust settled with someone would let us know how they did. Other than a short paragraph from the Press. Pridefest assured us that although they had bad weather and on unexpected protest (which by the way I let them know about well in advance) along with a fairly large contingent of police, that pridefest made out okay. I don't know about you, but I think it's about time that we found out what was going on. Really going on. Inquiring minds want to know.

No Mr. President, I think the responsibility is not just to me but to the rest of the LGBT community. I think you need to address the community at large and not just me. I hope you understand.

I'm sorry but I have no intention of contacting you personally because I think the responsible thing to do is to come forth honestly with a report to the community. The community wants to know if pridefest is viable and just how viable you are. I think it's about time someone comes forward with the financials. Not the same old happy rhetoric. I'm sure you know you are already in my crosshairs and I am sure that I would rather have you come forward first with the information without forcing me to dig out. Sooner or later the skeleton will come out of the closet. I just don't want to be the one that has to drag it out.

I like to think I am the eternal optimist and I hope that what you say will be good news, not bad. I do think it's about time that someone takes responsibility and comes forward and let us know (that is the LGBT community) so that we can keep this wonderful festival for many years to come. Don't you think it's about time we hear something from pridefest? It's been several months since pridefest and not one word other than the very short article in the Quest and QLife magazines (see my post below) assuring us that although there were some problems and pridefest will go on. We all know from inclement weather and protesters at the front gates that revenue was down, but how far down, that is the question? I think most people in the community would like to know how things are going. Or is this like years past another one of those gigantic mess ups that almost put them into bankruptcy? Strangely history seems to repeat itself. Is this what has happened or once again? Is this why they are staying strangely quiet? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Pridefest unfortunately because of the dates that they have chosen for the festival makes them self highly dependent upon the weather. If we get really good weather and it's warm out, which is very uncertain at the beginning of June, is likely that pridefest will be quite a success. On the other hand should we get bad weather attendance will be down and so won't revenues.

In past years we have dealt with the usual protesters who have caused very little if any problems. This year however, which I tried to point out to them and was unfortunately blown off, that they were in for a major protest. I contacted the president of pridefest and indicated that the Neo-Nazis and Bash Back Milwaukee were going to protest on Saturday in front of the festival grounds. Almost all of the various media in the city of Milwaukee were notified and each covered the protests. Why pridefest organizers did not take these warnings to heart, I do not know. I just wonder if their is insurance covered all the extra police protection that was needed? Or has this also added to the problems that currently exist? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I just wonder about the advertising that pridefest is doing sponsoring various entertainment in order to boost its revenues? After all they can't repeat what happened in the past to ask for Angels to bail them out. I don't know if anyone would do that again. I really don't like to sound like doom and gloom, but I really do suspect that they are in trouble. I do sincerely hope that they can bounce back and to raise the revenue they so desperately need so that we can continue celebrating pridefest in years to come.

If I might make a suggestion, I think it would be advantageous for pridefest to move the date of the festival to a time when we have warmer weather. Now I know that some will say that June is the month when pride is celebrated. That may be all well and good, but we do not live in a climate conducive to good weather. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of mother nature and it is either boom or bust. We either make it or we don't. On the other hand if pridefest were moved to to a time when there is warmer weather, there is a much higher likelihood of success. Not only that, and I don't know about you, but I like to see a little skin. Wouldn't you?

I would really like to find out what people think about this and I encourage your comments and or criticisms. Like me or hate me, this is the reality of the situation. I really do think we need some dialogue. It is for this reason that many times I act as a devil's advocate to force people to think and to force them into dialogue, whether they like it or not. Remember, I do this for our own good. So let's get some dialogue going, shall we?

Hi everyone

Guess what, I just got a new voice recognition software called Dragon Naturally Speaking. I can dictate this whole thing. It is going to be quite fun to do. This morning I watched TV the complete replay of 9/11 and MSNBC. It was quite traumatic to see the whole thing all over again on the TV. They played it as though it was happening at this time. Almost like War of The Worlds when people did not know what was going on. Fortunately I think that most people are smarter now and did not get caught with their pants down. I do think that it is very important that we continue to remember what has happened, also considering the election between John McCain and Mr. Obama I really think that this will be a boon to the Republicans. Mr. John McCain, as you know it is a veteran where Mr. Obama is not. At least not to my knowledge. How this will play out in the election I do not know. Sources tell me that this will not have a very long impact. I really don't know who I want to vote for each one has their own strong points and weaknesses. I guess only time will tell. Inc.

I guess this software is working quite well. So I guess I will be using it quite often. I guess that's it for now. And have a nice day.

Pridefest the aftermath 2

Neo-Nazi's to the left all but ignored. Cops in riot gear facing Bash Back MKE. I counted about 16 in riot gear. There were five cops on horseback and others in and out of uniform off to the side. That is unusual for pridefest and I wonder what that is going to cost? When I was working security on the weekend near Bar Louie, there were only two cops on horse back in 6 to 8 directing traffic. Now I don't know about you but this is a little out of the ordinary. Don't you think?

Another Pridefest is done and over with. I could not make it to the fest Friday night because I had to work patrolling Milwaukee's downtown garages, making sure it is safe and sound for bar goers. I did however go Saturday when the protesters showed up. Only one religious protester was there when I arrived shortly after noon. Inside the grounds were quite pleasant and well planned. I walked around to see what vender's were present. Various organizations surrounded the center grassy area where volleyball was being played. One tent hosted by ARCW had hundreds of condoms displayed in various plastic bins free for the taking. They even had small carry-out containers you could fill to the brim if you so choose.
I cruised the various food vendors with their usual selection of finger food, brats, hamburgers, pizza, corn on the cob and other various and sundry dishes. Tuns of calories and way too much sugar for this diabetics taste and as usual nothing for vegetarians or health food junkies. A usual sore spot for myself and others, I'm sure.
Because of soaring gas prices and in order to save a trip to Chicago, this was a good time to stock up on new tee shirts, jewelery and other paraphernalia. Unfortunately Milwaukee isn't known for its wide variety of gay goods.
Soon after 1 pm the protesters showed up in force. If you want to count about Ten Neo-Nazis a force to be reckoned with. However (Drum roll please) Bash Back Milwaukee showed up about 30 to 40 strong as did the Police. Riot gear and all. It was a stand off to be sure, one group hurling insults back and forth while the Cops (by my count 16 strong in riot gear between them) facing Bash Back and all but ignoring the small group of Neo-Nazis.
Someone must have been watching over the whole thing because around 2:30 pm it started to rain dispersing onlookers and protesters. About this time I left and soon after the downpour began pretty much ending the festivities for the evening.
Sunday I returned. It was sunny but most of the groups that were in the center area had packed up and most tents were empty. The rest of the event went on as planned. So there you have it. My view of Pridefest. Now the only question is whether they broke even or was it a bust? We shall see.

Many people have expressed concern for PrideFest due to the unprecedented challenges the festival and its patrons faced over the weekend. Both the weather and a small protest drew attention away from the purpose of this event: to celebrate our lives and our community. However, I want to assure you that neither weather nor protesters can or will stop PrideFest and its merry people from celebrating life, love and the history of the LGBT community. While weather and protesters can have an impact on the final results of success, our event is still a success none-the-less. Our crowds were smaller this year than in previous years, but they were a celebratory, hearty bunch. Few people left during Saturday's and Sunday's storms; instead, they stayed together and enjoyed what they could and created an atmosphere of community towards each other by sharing a common experience.
PrideFest's revenues will be down this year from previous years, but because of past successes and sound management, PrideFest will not fall. The strong involvement of the festival's many volunteers, who have worked diligently throughout the year to build financial and operational support, has made PrideFest strong enough to weather the storms.

Pridefest protest update

Just so you know here is the link to the BashBackMKE plans for a protest at Pridefest. Not only are they going to protest the protesters. That is the Religious Right and the Neo-Nazis but Pridefest itself because they have not included any Lesbians or Trans Folk on the Board or in any type of leadership position. A chronic problem since the festivals inception.

Given what has happened at RiverSplash ( I was there doing patrols) with an almost riot, The director of Pridefest has been conspicuously quiet concerning security measures. I would think that they would publish a statement to the media assuring the public that Pridefest will be doing its utmost to protect festival goers entering the grounds. Perhaps it would be wise to provide an alternate entrance for those with disabilities or who are squeamish about entering at the main gate? Or is this just another example of their gross mismanagement that seems to happen year after year? Then again perhaps we should insist that the President of Pridefest resign and someone with proper management and marketing skills replace him? What do you think?

How to deal with Pridefest protesters

This year we will have some new guests outside the gates protesting and shouting at us as we enter the grounds. My question is do you know what to do as you pass them or when they yell slurs at you?
Remember that yelling back at them is exactly what they want. They feed on that. That is what they want. So what do you do?
Here are my suggestions;

Ignore them. Act as though they don't exist.
Don't talk to them. Not one word. They hate that.
Don't debate them. Its useless and only makes them more aggressive.
Please don't throw anything at them. You will be arrested, not them.
Don't put your hands on them. Don't push them and don't try to punch them. You will be arrested.
If you have to say something, simply say "Have a nice day" That's all. Nothing else.

That's basically it. Walk on the other side of the street if you feel uncomfortable. Bring a friend or have some one escort you to the gate. Above all have a good time.

Trouble with Pride in Madison

From what I get they will only have the parade and political get together by the Capitol and that will be about it. I will be doing some investigation and will post an update as soon as I get it. Visioning and the Shepherd Express fiasco

Shout Milwaukee is dead

The Shepherd Express fiasco died on the vine. In effect the Visioning Project thought that our Gay Press Sucks. Instead of working with them to try to increase their circulation and outlets where the newspapers could be picked up, they opted to use the Shepherd Express in which to place their news.

Now some will say that with the advent of computers and access to news stories almost instantaneously as they occur that the local print media just can't hack it. For local and national news this may be true, however many events that will never be covered by any media source is covered, or at least should be by the Gay press. Events at the bars and at the LGBT Center along with human interest stories and in depth analysis of political happenings that affect all of us are the things that should be covered. Gay businesses should advertise too. Not only will lgbt people be aware of Gay friendly establishments but these businesses also benefit from increased sales and exposure.

The silence is deafening

Not a peep so far from the Visioning Project since I posted on my blog.

How interesting?

Did they abandon their email and are now conversing by Phone?

Then again perhaps I deflated some egos.

Don't get me wrong, getting a bunch of our leaders together to hash out perceived problems within the gay community and suggesting ways to correct them is laudable.

My main interest is the problem of Accountability. So far there is none. Leaders take turns facilitating meetings making it extremely difficult to determine who is responsible for what.

They need some sort of structure patterned after the rules and regulations promulgated under Roberts Rules of Order. Any other structure As far as I am concerned is unacceptable.

Is that too much to ask?

Visioning Project Mission Statement revision

Does anyone even know about the Visioning Project and what it does? I am sure you don't and neither do you know the original mission statement.

Here is the original statement;
"The Greater Milwaukee Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Visioning Project provides a forum to determine shared interests and effect collaboration among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender communities.“

Here is what has been suggested after several revisions;
We are a core group of LGBT organizations working collaboratively to identify shared problems and develop mutually agreeable solutions that support, motivate and foster our community growth and culture.

Now here is my response to that;
Wouldn't it be more correct to say that the Visioning Project is comprised of a group of individuals in leadership positions representing various LGBT organizations collaborating to solve shared problems within our community in order to foster its growth? So far the wording that has been suggested for the founding statement is just too ambiguous.

As I see it no group or organization ever proposed that the Visioning project be formed. It was if I am correct, the invention of the Cream City Foundation, specifically Maria Cadenas'. Also no group or organization to my knowledge has ever authorized or asked this project/committee to make any decisions on their behalf.

The other thing that bothers me is because leadership at each meeting shifts to a different individual, there is no accountability. The founding statement is a good start but there must also be some sort of rules and regulations under which the committee operates. At this point in time there are none, and this to me is a problem. Might I suggest Roberts Rules of Order as a starting point. (ie. Bylaws)

A history of the project is a good idea but smacks of self aggrandizement or a pat on the back in order to make your group look good. Perhaps that should be put on hold until the organizational paperwork is completed. Just a thought.

Of course that is only my humble opinion.

I suppose they think that this blasphemy's the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Sunday. Personally I think their timing is perfect and the Religious Right who by the way are anything but is brilliant. Of course somehow they are trying to spin it around to include the Homosexual Agenda, intimating that this is part of our agenda. How stupid can they be? This is a show by heterosexuals primarily for heterosexuals. Leave it to the progressive English to come up with something so totally sacrilegious.

Last night Outwards Books sponsored a talk by Robert Minor on his current book "When Religion is an Addiction" This was a very informative discussion on how Religion can become an addiction, how it comes about and why. What we do to further it and how to respond to it.

Basically we need to stop enabling the religious people's addiction by altering our way of thinking. It deals with the the questions such as Will we call it an addiction? How those caught up in the addictive web get a "High" or "Fix" from those who preach about righteousness and and how it feeds those with low self-esteem to feel better than those around them. Its like a drug where they never quite reach that ultimate High and ever strive for more.

He went into detail about how we can overcome some of the pitfalls that liberal thinking and actions can exacerbate the situation. We should not argue religion with them, but we should concentrate instead on how they feel about themselves.

Arguing our position doesn't work and we should discontinue that approach. It just feeds on their addiction. We have to let them hit Rock Bottom and not feel sorry for them. First we have to save ourselves. Secondly we need to ask why we are in this fight. We must recognize addictive religion and non-addictive religion, know the difference, and how they relate to that. Be clear about what you can and cannot do for the addict and the addiction. Lastly to remove the addict from the addiction and the the driver's seat in our society and our lives.

All this is explained in his book and talk. It is a short 153 pages and will certainly enlighten many about how the Religious Right act and think. It is a good book to read and study now because Pride Fest is just around the corner and with it will undoubtedly come the extremists outside the gates. Undoubtedly it will give some of us the knowledge to better handle the situation.

ELCA Same crap different wording

I really hope you are sitting down for this one. I can't believe that this is the same old Crap using different language. The Lutheran Church can fool some of us some of the time but they can't fool us all the time and this is one of them. The key word they are using is TRUST instead of FAITH. I can hear the preacher on the pulpit "You gotta take it on Faith. Amen? Trust me." Gag me with a spoon (my comment).
This is the same garbage they have been spooing forth continuously for years. By changing the wording i suppose they are thinking that this is something new. I got news for you, it isn't. It is the same old rhetoric. They are trying to pawn off the same old tired hateful rhetoric in sheep's clothing. If nothing it is an interesting read. Just don't expect anything to change. I doubt that anything will. Such is life. Ho humm. Yawn. Moving right along.

ELCA 'Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality' Now Available

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Task Force for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Studies on Sexuality released the "Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality" March 13 for study and response across the 4.8 million-member ELCA. Responses to the draft social statement are due to the task force Nov. 1, 2008.

Social statements are teaching documents that assist Lutherans in forming judgments on social issues. They provide theological and ethical framework for discussion, discernment and decision-making, set policy for the church, and guide the church's advocacy and work in church and society. Social statements are adopted by a two-thirds vote at ELCA churchwide assemblies. Held every other year, the churchwide assembly is the ELCA's highest legislative authority. The next assembly is Aug. 17-23, 2009, in Minneapolis.

"We are sexual creatures from the moment of birth to the time of death. This draft social statement takes that seriously and addresses sexuality in relation to the various situations of our lives. The common question at all times is what serves the good of the neighbor, what creates and sustains trust, and what protects from harm," said the Rev. Rebecca S. Larson, executive director, ELCA Church in Society.

"It is the hope of the task force that this draft social statement will invite this church into continued conversation. This draft forms the best thinking of the task force to date, although not all members of the task force agree with all parts of the document. The task force hopes to learn what in the draft is helpful, what might be changed, and what is missing," said Larson.

Most of the ELCA's 65 synods plan to host hearings between March and November as an opportunity for Lutherans to discuss the draft social statement. At least one representative of the task force is to attend each hearing. The ELCA has 10,549 congregations organized into its 65 synods. The draft document contains a form for other responses.

Based on the responses from the church the task force will revise and prepare a proposed social statement, which is due in early 2009. The proposed social statement will be given to the ELCA Church Council for its consideration and with a request to place the document on the agenda of the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly for action. The Church Council is the ELCA's legislative authority between churchwide assemblies.

The 2001 ELCA Churchwide Assembly initiated the process to develop a social statement on human sexuality. At the direction of the council, a task force was formed to carry out the process. The task force published three studies and a youth resource to invite deliberation and response across the ELCA under the "Journey Together Faithfully" banner.

Content of the ELCA 'Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality'

The draft social statement does not address current ELCA policies, which "preclude practicing homosexual persons from the rosters of this church." The task force has been asked to make recommendations on official church rosters to the 2009 churchwide assembly. These recommendations will be available in February 2009.

There are four primary sections between the draft social statement's introduction and conclusion: "Theological and ethical foundations for understanding sexuality"; "Sexuality as part of God's creative activity"; "Trust at the heart of faith active in love"; and, "Social trust and the common good."

Section one recognizes that the Lutheran tradition has a unique contribution to the conversation and moral discernment on human sexuality. Section two explores a Lutheran approach to sexual ethics. Section three describes "God's gift of sexuality" in creation.

Section four looks at matters of trust -- how trust among people "forms the basis of healthy relationships, including sexual relationships." This section also looks at marriage, cohabitation, same-gender relationships and more. The draft social statement says that in commitment and sexuality "this church teaches that degrees of physical intimacy should be carefully matched to degrees of affection and commitment. This also suggests a way to understand why this church has taught that the greatest physical intimacies, such as intercourse, should be matched with and sheltered by the highest level of binding commitment, such as found in marriage." The draft statement says that the ELCA "does not favor or give approval to cohabitation arrangements outside of marriage" but that there are broad social forces and that "certain laws and economic realities in this society create economic hardship for many, including senior citizens, who desire to be legally married."

The draft statement says that after "many years of study and conversation, this church does not have consensus regarding loving and committed same-gender relationships. This church has committed itself to continuing to accompany one another in study, prayer, discernment and pastoral care."

Section five extends to the area of how "trust fosters healthy sexuality in community life."

"Lutherans believe that there is nothing we can do -- either right or wrong action -- to win the love of God. God's love comes to us despite who we are. And, we respond to that love by caring for and seeking the good of our neighbor," said Larson.

"This draft social statement insists that God has created us as sexual and therefore relational beings. This is God's intention and it is good. It is for this reason that the theme of trust is so evident, because trust is the cornerstone for the flourishing of all relationships and of society," said Larson. "In no area of our lives is trust more critical than in the area of human sexuality. We are therefore called to demonstrate trust in all of our relationships and to work to make this world a more trustworthy place."

Lutherans do not make up a "rule book of right and wrong behaviors" which, Larson said, will not be found in the draft social statement. "Lutherans seek to help people make ethical decisions in the midst of the messiness of life," she said, adding that the draft social statement on human sexuality speaks strongly against "all the causes of harm, including and especially the violation of trust for children," and the misuse of trust and power in all relationships.
According to the Rev. Peter Strommen, bishop, ELCA Northeastern Minnesota Synod, Duluth, and task force chair, the draft social statement "intentionally grounds its thinking in an evangelical Lutheran tradition. The reader will notice this as a prominent characteristic of the document. In addition, a case is made for important social institutions such as marriage. It is recognized that the same degree of social consensus that once existed can no longer be assumed. The use of 'trust' represents a fresh approach that is embedded in Lutheran tradition and effective in addressing both public and personal dimensions of human sexuality. This document works with the inter-relationship of the social, cultural, economic and religious, both private and public."

Strommen added that the intent of the draft social statement is "churchwide engagement and feedback. The invitation is, 'let's think together and improve this document before it comes as a proposed statement in 2009."

Here we go again

Has anyone looked at the Visioning Project Blog where they are supposed to post the minutes of their meetings? Funny how they purposely pointed this out to me when I criticized them. Neither since that time or now have they updated the blog. My question is Why haven't they? These people are supposed to be leaders in our community and they operate as though they don't have to be accountable to anyone. I ask you, is that any way to run an organization?

Apparently they don't like the exercise of free speech especially when it affects one of them. Do they really expect us to follow like sheep to the slaughter house? I am not one of those sheeple. I refuse to follow blindly. If I feel something is wrong I will speak up and let everyone know about it. That is just the way I am, like it or not.

I am not ashamed to say that I oppose the Shepherd Express decision by the Visioning project. It is telling us that they don't like the gay press. Their excuse is that they are not reaching the greater community and that there are those who will not read gay newspapers, probably because they will be harassed by their peers if they are caught doing so. This is a long standing problem with the Gay community that we are afraid to come out for fear of the shame and possible ridicule we may endure. Perhaps we fear the attacks from those who don't like gays and lesbians and other queers. Guess what? The more we are out there the less we will be harassed and disliked.

Face it there is still quite a bit of prejudice out there. It isn't going to go away any time soon if we keep in the closet.

Believe me there are times when I'd like to just plain abandon the gay community and walk away form the whole thing, but I can't. I am not a quitter. I am a fighter and you better get used to it. I'm like that little dog who doesn't know the meaning of the word no who bites you in the ass and won't let go. I've had it with all these pissie queens.

Another thing that really gets my goat is that the guy who writes the articles for the Shepherd Express wants me to stop emailing him. Then who are we to write to if we don't agree with his views? Anyone who wants his email address, I'll be happy to give it to you.

Hillery or Obama that is the question?

First of all I want everyone to know that I act as the Devil's Advocate many many times. I do it on purpose to get people to think about subjects that may be unpopular. I do it to get your undivided attention. Pure and simple. Recently I sent an email to a group of people concerning the amount of money she and her husband will be or are receiving. I got it from one of my cousins.

Do I agree with everything it says. Of course not. What really irks me is that someone called it "Hate e-mail" Can you believe that? Boys and girls, it politics, pure and simple. The email below are not the views of this blogger.

I did a search on the Clinton's philanthropy and found very little. What I did find were other philanthropic organizations or people giving money to some of her causes. Not Her money mind you but someone else's.

There are two things that give me the jitters. One is that Bill (an ex-president) has full access to everything that goes on at the White House. It is a given that Bill has been sticking his nose into various political happenings while Hillary is out campaigning. Some of her aids have had to do some explaining. What worries me is will he get involved in her presidency if she is elected president? How will that effect you and I? Good or Bad?

Remember that when Shrub got elected president, elder Bush as not come to his rescue nor has he interfered in any way. Will Bill do the same? Your guess is as good as mine.

The second thing is that Hillary has not always been forthcoming during debates or under questioning by her peers. It seems to me that they have had to play 50 questions to get her to give a straight answer. Her evasiveness is what I have a problem with. Perhaps I am a cynic or perhaps it is because of over thirty years working in the area of law enforcement that I distrust anyone who will not answer simple questions or is purposely evasive. I notice these things and it bothers me.

You and I have to scrape along paycheck to paycheck to barely survive. Do you think that she would ever give any part of the money she will get and give it to the homeless or someone in need? Don't count on it.

Read what was sent to me and make your own decision. One word of warning. No one said you have to like it or agree with it. But DO think about it. The views expressed below are NOT my views. I sent it out to start a dialog.

It was pointed out to me that there were and still are politicians who have been or are now receiving these same benefits. Does that make it right? I would hope that there would be a resounding NO. I would also hope that the American public would like to see that changed. It would go a long way in solving the deficit, that and stemming a lot of the Pork-Barrel spending.

If Bill outlives her, he then inherits HER salary until HE dies. He is already getting his Presidential salary until he dies. If Hillary outlives Bill, she also gets HIS salary until she dies. Guess who pays for that? It's common knowledge that in order for her to establish NY residency, they purchased a million dollarplus house in upscale Chappaqua , New York .

They are entitled to Secret Service protection for life. Still makes sense. Here is where it becomes interesting Their mortgage payments hover at around $10,000 per month. BUT, an extra residence 'had' to be built within the acreage to house the Secret Service agents
The Clintons charge the Federal government $10,000 monthly rent for the use of that extra residence, which is about equal to their mortgage payment. This means that we, the taxpayers, are paying the Clinton's salary, mortgage, transportation, safety and security, as well as the salaries for their 12 man staff and,this is all perfectly legal!

Milwaukee LGBT Community Center Annual Membership Meeting

On Thursday February 7th 2008 the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will be holding its annual Membership Meeting. It will be at the the LGBT Center @ 315 W Court St. There will be reception at 6:00pm with the Annual Meeting at 6:30 to 8:00pm.

Again this is a good time to attend to voice your opinions on the direction and plans that the LGBT Center has in store.

One of the things that bothers me is the change to become a philanthropic organization which is already part and parcel to the Cream City Foundation. Personally I don't think it a good idea. I don't think they should be giving away money to anyone. What they should be doing is saving for a new more accessible (to those with disabilities) building. As it stands the only thing they have done is to install a platform which rises to the first floor for those with disabilities. they cannot go into the lower basement level nor can they get to the upper (2nd floor) level except with great difficulty. As with other buildings the Center has occupied this seems to be a big issue with many people. That and the lack of adequate parking.

Another problem I see as one of the first people involved in the proposed new LGBT center (there wasn't one at the time) was that the Center was to be a place where the Community could meet and commiserate. It was not meant to house mostly gay and lesbian businesses or organizations to a great extent as it now stands. Very few organizations use the Community Room because of the serious lack of parking in the area.

I think we need to remind our leaders that it is more important to get a new location which is better suited to those with disabilities than the one we have. Let the Cream City Foundation worry about Philanthropy. This in my opinion is the only way our community can grow and become more cohesive. Of course that is only my humble opinion.

Center Advocates Annual Meeting

Tonight Monday January 28th 2008 the Center Advocates will be holding their Annual Meeting at the Art Bar located at 722 East Burleigh Street. The Annual Meeting will be at 5:30pm till about 6:pm with a Reception from 6:00pm to 7:30pm with light refreshments, and a cash bar.

Be sure to RSVP as I am sure that they want to have enough refreshments available for everyone. This will be a good time to become a member if for no other reason to be able to vote on the proposed by-law changes or voice your opinions concerning the direction the Advocates are planning to take this year.

Sometimes I think apathy runs rampant in our community. Sitting by while others make decisions for us which may or may not be in our best interests can prove to be disastrous. There are those who have tremendous egos and are not held accountable or restrained will make decisions according to their own agenda without thought to the effect they have on the rest of us. In this respect I think it is very important that we attend these gatherings and voice our opinions.

This is your community and your opinion is valuable. As far as I am concerned if you don't vote or make your voice heard, you no longer have the right to squawk about the outcome should it not be in your favor. So come on out and let them know what you think and make a difference.

Are we getting one page or what?

Those present expressed support of this new development and concerns regarding how this will impact Q Life: specifically their advertising section. One option, presented by Maggi Cage, is to offer advertisement in both Q Life and The Shepard Express for one fee. Further discussion will be needed.

Shepherd Expresses or Q-Life? this means that the Shepherd will steal advertisers away from Q-life making it even harder for them to generate advertising revenue thereby staying alive. Correct me if I am wrong.

Who is going to pick up Q-life is the same news is in the Shepherd? I can't believe that this will not hurt the Q-Life or any other gay newspaper.

I wrote a note to the editor of the Shepherd Express then today I called them. Conveniently they were out of the office and I was directed to leave my name and number and they would get back to me. Yeah right. I'll give them another day then I will consider that they don't want to talk.

Next I sent several emails to the director of the LGBT center which were returned as undeliverable even though I got the address from the Visioning Project email list. Seems interesting that their emails get through but mine don't. I guess this is another example of the non-responsiveness of our so-called community leaders.

It makes me wonder if they think that they are better than us? Well I have news for them. We chose you to represent us and you are responsible to answer our needs. You are not above us. You work for us. We hired you and we can also fire you if you don't respond to us. You need us if you want to keep your jobs. Remember that we can always get someone else. You need us, we don't need you.

I hope to see a lot of people at the meeting at the Gay Arts Center on the 21st at 9 am. Like Stonewall, Im pissed and I'm not going to take it any more. How about you?

Well, where do I start?
The whole fracas currently going on about the so – called "Visioning" project and their undercover attempts to "Mainstream" the LGBT… community press has me thinking…Could all these attempts at "Mainstreaming" the LGBT… community really be nothing more than an attempt by the more affluent part of our LGBT… community to show how much they envy the strait "Mainstream"? … Really – I mean…
Any 1st grader knows that the only way to gain approval is through conformity. You see it in the playgrounds everyday. One kid, who is thought to be cool, has everyone else trying to emulate them. They try to dress like them, talk like them, and even behave like them. – All in an attempt to be considered part of the "cool majority".

By the same token, there are kids who could never fit into the so – called "ideal" and are considered outcasts. There is little, if any, chance that they will fit in with the others.
The outcasts are the most desperate ones. They want to be just like the majority of the kids who are considered cool and, therefore, acceptable.

Now, whether they’re right or wrong, the majority is perceived as being the only desirable state of being. Anything less (Or, for that matter, different) is not worthy of consideration.
I think it’s time to look at the whole thing from a psychological standpoint.
Although there are always going to be certain "Advantages" to being in a conformed group, there are also sacrifices that people make to be included in same – said group. Most of it is the ability to identify those parts of an individual that are, well, individual.

If I wanted to be "Just like everyone else", I would have married a woman, had children, joined the Republican (or any other political) party, gotten a job in my dream career.
For those who know me, this is a far cry from my "Reality" In short, I would have given up everything that I am and stand for to be "Just like everyone else" I am not now, nor will I ever be.

There is a group that "raises money" for the LGBT… community. They obviously, by their actions over the years, are embarrassed to be who they are. Everything they do is an attempt to "fit in" with the greater community (Please insert the word "strait", if you must) at large.

WELL I GOT A NEWSFLASH FOR YOU!!
Not only are they in denial of their uniqueness, but they are shoving that denial down the throats of the rest of us.

Sure, my life would be a whole lot different if I could "Marry my partner". I could have shared his health care during a time when I was discovering several breakdowns in my body. Do I feel the exchanging of vows in a church is the only way to do this? Not by a long shot!

Along the same lines, I DO NOT NEED to have an overpriced festival to share my so called "uniqueness" and, even if I did, I DO NOT NEED TO HAVE IT on the expensive park by the lake. Furthermore, I would not have to show it by going on a 3 day drunk, - Just like the thousands upon thousands of other festival goers do.

I share my uniqueness with everyone I meet or have contact with everyday.
It has been said that conformity is a crutch for the weak… and I agree! For all those who spend their efforts into conforming and being "just like everyone else" are losing who they really are.
All that I am, the good, the bad, and the ugly, have been formed by all my experiences.
I have survived bar politics, Leather club in – fights, and even the birth, maturing, and death of a social club in this town. I will still be going strong in the future no matter what may come my way because I know I am fine just as I am. I am not the majority, nor would I want to be.
I can not give up any aspect of myself. It’s just a price I am not willing to pay.
The queer folks at Stonewall felt the same way and they took a stand. They got tired of being harassed for being different. They refused to cave in to pressure to "Be like everyone else" and they refused to deny their inner selves for conformity’s sake.

It’s time we do the same.

Urgent update on the state of the Visioning Project

Oh I must have hit a nerve. Guess who called? On the phone no less. None other than Maria the director of the Cream City Foundation. Was I evasive enough? I hope so.
I assume she wanted to feel me out to find out how I would respond to what she had to say.

I did find this out the Visioning project blog. Interesting as the last minutes were posted 11 months ago. Not very good record keeping if you ask me. That was January 2007 and it is now December. Lots of blank space.

Another very valid question I would like to ask as she said that the Shepherd was not going to charge to put a section (I read that as more than one page) in their paper. Lets see that's 75000 copies which translates into how many more pages. Who is going to pay for this extra space and paper) ? I'm not stupid. Somebody has to pay. Who?

OK they have no minutes, No Bylaws, no Standard Operating procedures, no elections and no grievance policy. Every volunteer organization usually has them. How come they don't? I certainly can't believe that they have no expenses whatsoever. Then how do they finance the projects they do?

Who is going to pay for the Gay News in the Shepherd Express?

Another question pops up concerning the Visioning Project and the Shepherd Express. Precisely who is going to cover the costs of this project? Is it the Cream City Foundation? If so why haven't they made this decision public? Aren't they supposed to let the public know ahead of time before they decided to begin this project? If it isn't then who is? Why haven't they divulged this information?

And here are some more.

Who started the Visioning Project and Why?
Who did this person approach to join this project? And Why?
Why don't they take minuets?
Why is there such an underhanded attempt at non-disclosure?
Who was the one appointed to contact the Shepherd Express and negotiate a contract with them? Who precisely are they claiming to represent and who gave them the authority to do so? Why wasn't anybody told about it?
Most importantly, where is the money coming from?

I think that these are very important questions that need to be answered and not swept under the table the way many of the problems that have surfaced within our community, like the money problems with Pride Fest had, several directors suddenly resigning if my memory serves me right.

Why do so many people not know about this organization which is supposedly acting in our best interest? If they are, why haven't they ever asked for our input?

I'll tell you what, I'm going to demand an independent audit because I want to know where all the money is going and why they are keeping everything secret. Besides, who gave them the authority to represent us? I sure didn't. Did you?

A View on the Shepherd Express/Visioning Project

Dear Visionaries:

Having recently read the article posted at http://garysdish.blogspot.com regarding the incorporation of Gay and Lesbian Community print media news into the Shepard Express I have a few thoughts that I think would be best expressed on this issue.

I hold to the position that I am in direct opposition to any involvement on the part of the Lesbian and Gay community to attempt to create a monthly forum in the Shepherd Express because doing so would, in my opinion, divide the community along loyalty lines much like it did, in those historic days, when Milwaukee received the majority of its GLBTIQ news from two competing papers. People either read and supported one or the other, but in very few cases, did they support both effectively enough to keep them in print.

In addition to the fact that as history shows our city cannot seem to sustain or support multiple newspapers there is a secondary issue present that I fear is being forgotten by each and every one of you. To put it simple the Shepherd Express is principally a heterosexual newspaper whose primary purpose is to focus its storylines on the needs and interests of the vast majority of its readers who are also primarily heterosexual in their lifestyles and viewpoints.

This fact should, if it has not already done so, raise concerns in the hearts and minds of all of you as there exists a likelihood that the Shepherd Express would ever become the only clearly visible voice of GLBTIQ news in the Metropolitan Milwaukee is theoretically likely as support for the existing paper would be impacted negatively. Given this and the additional fact that there simply is no “set in stone” guarantee that the Shepherd Express would not at some point eventually relent to any pressure from those in our society who, because of homophobia, would seek to totally eradicate our visibility in media I feel that on this issue you are not acting in the best interests of the community you claim to represent.

The Visioning Project and all of its members, without exception, should be ashamed of themselves for not speaking out in defense of the rights and liberties enshrined in the Constitution. Our democratic republic was after all founded by visionaries who in many cases gave their lives to preserve the voice of the minority opinion which fashioned the very fabric on which our flag is flown today.

Silencing our voices in the name of protecting the profitable interests of the private sector fails to service the need for a public independent news outlet that consistently promotes our diverse culture as opposed to allowing ourselves to be morphed into nothing more than a segment of society worthy of an occasional honorable mention in a print section permitting us to express our simple views.

For this reason, I encourage everyone who is opposed to this initiative to act now, and in good conscience contact the Shepherd Express as listed below:

Something stinks about the Shepherd Express deal and the Visioning Project

Here goes, guess who the organizations are behind the Visioning Project? For one the President of Sage, The Director of the LGBT Center, The Gay Arts Center which by the way in connected to Pride Fest, the Minister of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church, and the Cream City Foundation and Interweave which is part of the First Unitarian Society to name a few.

Did you also know that they don't take any notes when they meet? Did you also know that they do not have any Web Address, Yahoo Group or Web Page? Seems a little strange, don't you think? Sounds to me like we have a Secret Organization in our midst that very few people even know about.

This whole cabal that is in the works between the Visioning Project and Shepherd Express to present our Gay News (a straight paper mind you) will ultimately undermine and even put the gay newspapers being published out of business. Have they made any effort to work with them? They say they did, but don't you believe it. It was a half hearted effort at best and I bet bottom dollar that Pride Fest is somehow involved in this. What better way to get back at or punish Q-Life for not publishing the Pride Guide? Quest will be affected by this too. Bank on it. You do know that once they get their foot in the door with the Shepherd Express that they will probably publish the guide in their newspaper leaving our newspapers out in the cold. Oh and how about advertising? Their rates are so high most gay business can't afford it. How do you think it will affect their bottom line or their business?

Do you think that this deal should go through? ABSOLUTELY NOT What I want you to do is call the Shepherd Express and tell them to keep their noses out of our gay lives. We don't need them and we don't want them period. Sure they will tell us that a gay person will be writing articles, but how long will that last and some straight person starts doing it? I don't even want to think about that one.

I think we need to tell them this really sucks. the sooner the better. Unless they come up with a Non-Competition Agreement protecting the gay papers already in existence, I am totally against it.

Visioning Project and Shepherd Express

Just recently I picked up Q-Life magazine, one of Milwaukee's LGBT monthly newspapers and what should I see but an editorial by the Editor in Chief about how she was stunned that the Milwaukee Visioning Project was negotiating to have a queer section in the Shepherd Express newspaper on a monthly basis. Can you believe it? Without ever contacting any other gay newspaper concerning their intentions. That to me is a slap in the face to our papers. It is as though they are saying "You Suck" we don't want to support you and we want to go with the mainstream Straight newspapers in order to cover our news.

These are people who are supposed to be leaders in our community. Many of them are but I wonder why they didn't first ask for public opinion concerning their intentions instead of going behind our backs. Pretty sneaky if you ask me.

Personally I prefer a queer newspaper for LGBT people, written by gay people. Not some mainstream straight newspaper writing about us. It is a fact that straights have stolen our favorite bars and even ruined one of our cherished events, Halloween. We should not allow then to steal our news too. I'm sorry but I can not support any organization, no matter how noble their intentions to sabotage our newspapers. We don't need more competition. What we need is for all of us to support our LGBT businesses. I don't like it and neither should you.

What we should do is let them know how we feel at the next meeting at the Gay Arts Center on December 21st at 9:00 am. Tell them its a rotten idea. I plan to.

Another missed opportunity for the LGBT Community

Below is the advertisement for the LGBT Thanksgiving Pot Luck Dinner. Whoever planned this was definitely not on the ball on this one. Its too late for Quest and also for Q-Life Magazine, it does not appear on the Sage Home page nor have they emailed it out as of this date.

Come on guys and girls you gotta do a better Job of planning. Q-Life should have been notified a long time ago so that they could have gotten it in the community events, Quest deadline is past also. I hope other people read this in time to participate. Contact one of the organizations if you plan to bring something (especially Sage as I believe that they are coordinating the food). This would be great for the Hit Bowlers who are away for the holidays and don't plan to attend the awards banquet.

LETS PUT IT INTO HIGH GEAR AND GET THE WORD OUT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

The continuing saga with David Bodoh

Sorry I haven't posted in a timely manner, but there hasn't been too much to write about. Anyway I went to the last hearing concerning Mr Bodoh. His attorney asked for an extension of time for Discovery, and I was told by Mr Bodoh himself that he has requested an expert witness to testify along with a psychological evaluation as to his innocence or lack of propensity as a pedophile or that he does not suffer from any sexual addiction or sexually compulsive behavior.

The trial has been set for November 27 at 8:45 am at the Waukesha County Court House, Room C215. I will be there of course.

As everyone should be acutely aware many of our encounters within the Gay community originate in the bars and in internet chat rooms. If we are not careful we can become victims of police sting operations leading to arrest and accusations of sexual impropriety. I must remind everyone that we MUST ask if the person we are trying to hook up with is of age. Remember anyone can publish a picture off the internet in order to make them seem much older than they actually are. That is why I like CuSeeMe or ICUII video chat for this purpose. Its really hard to hide your real identity. So before you go to any of the chat rooms on Yahoo or AOL, Gay.com or Alt.com or any other chat rooms make sure that you know how old the person you are trying to hook up with is so that you don't wind up in David's unfortunate position.

From here on lets hope for the best and see what transpires and of course Be Safe Out There.

What Do You Believe?

The First Unitarian Society is presenting a series of Sermons entitled "What Do You Believe?"
So far there have been two sermons. The first one was about what we believe or don't. Some people ask just what is a Unitarian and what actually do they believe? Our response is that you are not required to believe anything, that is your choice. You can believe in God or not. You can believe in Jesus or not. You can be an Atheist or an agnostic, a Pagan or Buddhist or Transcendentalist, or whatever suits your fancy. Whatever works for you. Of course someone said "I really like you Unitarians, you don't believe in a damn thing."

The second in the series was What is the meaning of life?
Sept. 23 "What happens when we die?"
Sept. 30 "Why do bad things happen?'
Oct. 7 "How do we know right from wrong?'
Oct 14 "Where are we headed?'
Oct. 21 "How do we live?'

If they want to survive they must complete the Healing Process

As usual Murphy's Law took effect. No matter how plainly you write or at what level someone will misunderstand it. Over thirty years of Customer Relations and direct contact with customers one thing is certain, they only hear what they want to hear (or read what they want to read) and miss the point entirely. This I think is the case with MMCC when it comes to the healing process.

The healing process follows several steps. The first is the initial shock of an unexpected event for example the sudden death of someone we love or is close to us. We cry and shed tears and grieve over their unexpected passing. Then we celebrate their passing into a supposed better place, Summerland or Heaven or wherever. The next phase is the letting go. Usually this is a gradual process and as memories fade we get on with our lives.

Some people have a hard time letting go and it takes an abnormally long time to do so. Sometimes they just can't and this is where the problem lies with The Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church. They haven't been able or willing to complete the healing process and get on with life. This along with numerous problems is what is stifling any progress they are trying to make. It is my humble opinion that they must complete the healing process if they ever intend to survive. This is the reason I became disenchanted and left. I was elevated to a position where I had the power to initiate change in a progressive and positive way, but this was not to be.

I gave them ample chances to create dialogue by phone, email, and even face to face but they did not do so. For this reason I have come to the conclusion that the minister has no conflict resolution experience and has not taken a positive leadership position in order to resolve the preexisting problems that continue to plague the church. It makes me wonder if she considers this just another job or what?

In the mean time it is my hope that they take these thoughts to heed these suggestions. Otherwise I don't think they will survive. There are many people I will dearly miss and some I won't. In the meantime I have moved on. Back to my UU roots.

Wonderful Image by the way, Blue hair and all. Actually it is not really Blue, its because they don't know how to adjust the image so that the background doesn't blend into the hair. Although I will admit it would be interesting and somewhat progressive. C'est la vie.

"I am excited about the opportunity to serve the MMCC congregation and the larger Milwaukee community,” Rev. Woodruff said. “My passion is outreach to those who are on the edges of society: the elderly, young Queer folk, people who are differently-abled -- anyone who struggles to be an active, accepted part of society. Christ calls us to reach out to those on the edges and to care for the stranger.”

Don't you mean the Mentally, Spiritually, and Physically messed up? After all those are the only ones who seem to want to walk into the door.

Bulletins Anyone?
Another thing is that they are offering to email the current Bulletin to those wishing to subscribe. The problem I have is that the site is not encrypted. Any information you enter on the form can be harvested by any spammer. Not only that, why do they need your phone number before they email the bulletin out? There are two problems with this. One is that they are harvesting names and information similar to the phishing schemes currently plaguing the Internet and I believe not exactly the most legal thing to do. The other problem concerns the press or other service wishing to obtain legitimate information. Seems to me like they are screening the applicants so that only approved people receive their bulletin. Kinda strange, don't you think? Makes you wonder what they have to hide. Hypocrisy reigns supreme at MMCC seems to me.

More about my reasons for leaving
The other thing that really bothers me is the fact that after I resigned no one so far has ever tried to find out the reasons why. Considering that I was once a Deacon. Only one person called accusing me of attacking them (something that escapes me) and then threatening me to boot after I mentioned in passing that there were still things relating to the late Mr Broyles on the site. I would think that he would be smarter than that, college education and all. These people really need to get a life.

My great disappointment
I was for a time a Deacon but stepped aside because of the feeling that some were becoming Elitist snobs. This I thought would level the playing field somewhat. Obviously not. Later I met with the minister who indicated that she would like to have me take a greater roll in the church. Again all talk and no action. It has been well over three years since the passing of Lew. I thought it was about time that we got on with life and get past the grieving process so I decided to prod therm along a little bit. Scanning down in my blog the result is only too clear. So I decided it was about time I exited stage left and head for greener pastures.

Will I ever be back. That is highly doubtful. Do I think that this church is doomed like Angels of Hope? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Angels of Hope Bites the Dust or Not?

This just in from the Quest online magazine the breaking news that Elaine Thomas has decided to resign as minister from Angels of Hope MCC as of October 16th 2007. What will happen to Angels of Hope only time will tell. Will it survive or not, that is the question? Personally I wish Elaine all the luck and success in her new endeavors. One question I have is if she is resigning as minister and going into hospice care, does that mean that as I interpret it according to the By-Laws of the UFMCC that she is giving up her ministry credentials too? According to the way I read it if you don't have a church to minister to for a certain period of time or you resign then you forfeit your credentials. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you for the inclusion. I also read a bit of the blog. up to the two priests at the river. I won't bother to go any further because you have now done what I did 22 years ago. That is telling the organization to go away. You and I can no longer be hypocritical enough to be associated with an organized church community. They will continue to hold to roots of formation that impede any growth in the spirit. May you live on in spiritual growth.

The person responsible for this whole debacle has now requested that their comments be removed from my blog. As a journalist I am wondering if there is a cover up? What is the reason for this? Inquiring minds would like to know. It would be interesting to know the real truth. Wouldn't you like to know too?

Most if not all of you are familiar with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church. Many know that Mr. Lew Broyles unexpectedly passed away during a trip to Mississippi while making arrangements to move down there and set up a new job several years ago. It was revealed to myself and certain others that he had decided that he had overstayed his welcome here and would be resigning his ministry to move down south.

Prior to his passing however Lew elevated a group of us to Deacon status in order to serve the church in his absence until a permanent pastor could be hired to fill the position. We fully expected that the transition would go smoothly but this was not to be because of this unfortunate passing. The church struggled through a interim minister and finally to the current pastor.

One of the problems was and still is the inability to let go of the memory of Mr Broyles. Fully recognizing this fact several years later I wrote the following letter which I present below. It being my intention to poke and prod them as I sometimes do in order to speed the process along. Obviously they missed the point entirely.

Yes, When is Lew Broyles ever going to die?

Every chance we get we refer to him, we compare him and we talk about him as though he never left. Its been several years and we still haven't let go of him. He exists on the both of the Church's web sites. We even buried him under a tree hoping that he would miraculously spring to life and walk into the front door of the church as if nothing ever happened.

Might I remind you that no one since Christ has ever risen from the dead. Not since his death over two thousand years ago or since.

This reminds me of a story of two Buddhist Priests who were about to cross a stream. On the bank was a person of lower class (untouchable) who was unable to walk or cross the stream. In India Buddhist Priests or anyone for that matter were not allowed to even touch such outcasts. Instead the Priest picked up the stranger and proceeded to carry him across the stream. When he got to the other side he set him down and proceeded along the road as if nothing ever happened. Astonished the other priest asked the one why he had done that? The Priest looked at him and asked why the other was still holding the outcast?

I ask the same question. Why are we still holding Lew? If we are ever to grow and advance we must let go. The sooner that is done the better.

And the response from the Senior Deacon;

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion...WRONG THOUGH THEY MAY BE!"

If everyone is still holding on to Lew, perhaps it's because they're not ready to let go yet. Grieving takes people different lengths of time; and he was, after all, a formative personality in the life of our church and community. Perhaps the best way to let go of him is to try to fill his big footsteps--by being bigger people ourselves.

And from the Music Director;

I am responsible for the website - I think you know that. If you have any suggestions or issues please let me know personally. Our church has a direct dealing policy. Why didn't you just talk to me about this at church or in person?

Ridiculing/questioning my work with the church is very hurtful and It's hard not to take it as a personal attack - especially if you don't talk to me and instead email a group of people. I do everything i possibly can to make the church grow and make it a positive place for people.

You are hereby instructed to remove my name from the membership roster of the church.
I also instruct The Treasurer to provide my final accounting of my tithing as of this date to the below listed address.

Bodoh Busted an update

Its been in the newspapers, on TV and even on the radio about David Bodoh getting busted. The news headlines always sensational and always ready to reveal all the sordid details about anyone caught trying to meet someone underage that can be classified as Child Enticement or possibly Child Molestation they latch upon like vultures because it is part of the current mania running rampant in our society.

Excuse me while I take the Devil's Advocate view here. This is by no means an endorsement of his actions, so don't get all bent out of shape. There is a bit of irony to this story. Many of us use the Internet to meet people and interact with them on a regular basis. This is where trouble lurks. Many of us create an on-line persona quite different from our own. We become more beautiful with better self images than what we see in reality. Some of us even like to play games where we change genders and age becoming much younger than we actually are. A very dangerous thing to do which could lead to a whole lot of trouble if one is not careful. Many of use aren't, and we get caught.

Then again there are those who create these persona's to entice young people into their good graces and ultimately into their web of deceit. Myself not being a psychologist have no idea what motivates someone to want to have sex with children or anyone who is under age no matter how they look. Other than the sex starved little urchins who prowl the streets and back alleys looking for sex for hire, I confess that I don't understand the motivation behind it all.

The moral of the story is to be careful out there. Things aren't always what they seem. Be careful who you meet and never go alone to meet them. Always meet in a public place and always let a friend know what you are doing and plan to call them to let them know you are OK. Let them know when you are finished and are heading home, them call them when you are back and safe.

Lastly the hearing has been postponed until August 30Th. Keep tuned and I will post the results as soon as I hear them. In the meantime, Be careful out there.

OSHO (formerly known as Rajneesh) used it in his sermon "Strange Consequences" - the F word has become the most important word in the English language. Not mastering it would simply be spiritually incorrect.

Personal Agendas abound Collaboration or Collusion? Inquiring minds want to know?

Does corruption reign supreme at MCC? Or is it one elite group's personal agenda that is at stake? Recently in the Bulletin on July 8th a notice exploring the possibility of members participating in Sunday services. For some mysterious reason my comments have not made it into the church Yahoo Group. Perhaps there is the specter of censorship afoot? Who knows? I'll let you be the judge of that.

Equally in the Sunday services
On Sunday, do you look at all who participate in service and say, "I could do that?" Well, you can! MMCC advocates the priesthood of all believers. That means that you can participate in or lead any of the rituals and activities on Sunday morning. On Sunday, July 22, at 9:00 am come and learn what is involved in all of the Sunday morning tasks. This is not a commitment, it is an exploration. Since there have been some changes to routine, regular worship leaders should also plan to attend.

In the interest of Equality for all my comment is added below

In the current announcements it was stated that "MCC advocates the priesthood of all believers." With that in mind I no longer plan to use the term "Deacon", instead however I plan to continue as an 'Independent Liturgical Consultant'. It is my hope that doing so will foster my values and principles in this matter and deepen my faith commitment to the work of Christ in keeping with his historic position for absolute equality in the midst of a completely classless society. Please know that I support any effort which is under way to decentralize the structure which seeks to deny a persons right to commune with God.
After all I don't think we need to be intermediary for the church, just servants of its calling. Truly I feel this can best be accomplished without the interference of a second fraternity.
Isn't it all about getting people into the seats (church growth) and not about promoting personal agendas or ideas? I root for anything that promotes change. I believe this is the only way that our church family has any hope of growing.
This is by no means a resignation of my duties to the congregation at large or to the church. I know that this will be an exciting change that will open the door to new opportunities allowing all members to exercise their desire to participate in or lead any of the activities on Sunday morning, not just a select few.

How far Left do you lean?

The New York Times indicates that young people tend to lean more and more left, preferring government run universal health care, an open door policy on immigration and gay marriage. It is an interesting article and I think that everyone should read it. It gives a pretty good insight as to where our heads are at this point in time. Strangely we are paying much more attention to the election and to Obama or Clinton as a choice for president rather than someone from the Republican side.

Why are we more optimistic about the outcome of the Iraq war? I don't know but I don't see it as a winnable situation. Your views would be welcome on this subject. Just click on the Comments at the bottom of this post to let us know your opinion. So tell us what you think.

The Saga continues at the B C Saloon

Remember I told you that I would keep you informed of the continuing saga unfolding at our infamous Leather Bar? I checked the court records and two of the people arrested pleaded guilty and paid their fines. The other two represented by a lawyer have decided to fight the charges in court and it has been adjourned for pre-trial conference prior to a jury trial.

In the mean time our notorious bar owner has renewed his license and walked away with (get this) a Warning Letter. Can you believe that? Which reminds me of a joke about Depth Perception. (Ask me some time and I'll tell you). Kinda makes you wonder though.

There is more to this one than meets the eye. You can bank an that. I'm not letting this one go until the fat lady sings. Stay tuned. This ain't done by a long shot.

PrideFest Did you like it?

Yes I finally did go to Pride Fest. It was OK I suppose if you like the carnival atmosphere, entertainment, booze and food. Although they did put together a fabulous Pride Guide, I was disappointed to see that there was only one political issue on the Stonewall Stage. That was the issue of transgender rights. Now that we went down in flames big times on the Marriage issue we've lost our interest in the political arena. No body wanted to listen back when I was on the Action Wisconsin Board that they would be opening a Hornets Nest of opposition if they went for the Marriage thing. I suggested instead that we should get our foot in the door first by going after as many Domestic Partner Benefits as we could, then and only then go for the marriage thing. But nobody wanted to listen and not only did we lose but it is now codified in the Constitution that marriage is between one Man and one Woman.

That leads me to the Commitment Ceremony conducted at PrideFest. Each year it has gotten smaller and smaller. This year there were perhaps only ten couples, mostly young adults who attended the event. The introduction by one of the female ministers mentioned that they could not use any of the words such as marriage or much of the traditional wording that is part and parcel to a commitment ceremony. I don't think that was even necessary. That whole part could have been left out and the alternatively worded ceremony recited. That was like pouring gasoline on the flames. Why in the world make it any worse than it already is? Personally I don't think we need another Commitment Ceremony next year. I think it denigrates the sanctity of marriage or commitment when it is performed in a Carnival atmosphere. If anyone from PrideFest is reading this, I think it would be best that this be ended. Those who wish to partake of a commitment ceremony should do so at the church or religious institution of their choosing.

Correct me if I am wrong but I heard that there were no fireworks. I also heard that the vendors had to pay to get in. Although they set another record attendance record, many of the volunteer organizations made less than in the past.

I guess while I'm on a roll bitching, a friend of mine who very seldom carries any cash found that some of the vendors did not take charge cards. To make matters worse the Cash machines were out to boot. I would think that if a vendor wants to sell their wares at the festival, they should be required to take charge cards the same as cash. I think as do many others that Summerfest's switch to cash really sucks. I think that the old way of purchasing tickets for beer or food was better. Of course that is only my humble opinion.

Are You ready for PrideFest?

Its coming this weekend, June 8th 9th and 10th. Pridefest will kick off the Summer season this Friday with opening ceremonies and great entertainment. On Saturday the entertainment continues with all kinds of activities for everyone. At about 2 pm will be the Parade down 2nd Street in the third ward. Back at the fest will be some fabulous main stage entertainment. Bu this time if you aren't suffering from a hangover Sunday's entertainment provides another round of partying. Later in the day, this time earlier at 3pm will be the mass commitment ceremony.
This is a time to meet friends you may not have seen for a while. It is also a time to stock up on clothing or jewelery or whatever for the year. Otherwise it means a trip down to Chicago to shop. Something I only do once a year.
Lets get dressed up and have fun this weekend.

Another one bites the dust

Right-wing Rev. Jerry Falwell, an evangelical icon once courted by Republicans and scorned by liberals for his tirades against homosexuality and abortion, died yesterday in his office at Virginia's Liberty University So reports The London Free Press and other newspapers around the globe.
Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, extended condolences on Falwell's death but said he'll be remembered as "someone who demonized and vilified us for political gain and someone who used religion to divide rather than unite our nation."
Should we be hapy or sad at his passing? If anyhting I am relieved. Definitely not sad. What I wonder is what will happen when he stands before the Pearly Gates? Will St Peter send him on down to the Devil? Who knows. I sure don't, thats for sure.

Good News about the Harbor Room

A real quickie this time, the Harbor Room is up and running. I went down to the Open Records section of the MPD and will be getting a report on the 'Anonymous Tip' and the consequent actions taken. I fully intend to report what I find here so stay tuned as more juicy tidbits are revealed. Later in the afternoon I called the Harbor Room and they informed me that everything was taken care of and that they were open for business as usual.

AN UPDATE ON THE OTHER LEATHER BAR ARRESTS

Checking the court records Two of the perpetrators have postponed their pleas till the just before Memorial day. According to the court records they expect guilty pleas. As to the other two, one has pleaded no contest and the other guilty. Now I wonder how this will reflect on the upcoming bar renewal coming up at the end of the month? Stay tuned and I'll let you know what happens.

Some random thoughts

Just a little tidbit came to mind about a conversation I had with a friend about the inclusion of LGBTQ inclusive churches in the Milwaukee area being linked to church web sites. It was my suggestion that the Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church include in its list of links churches that are inclusive to LGBTQ people. I suggested two churches one of which was listed but the other as of this date has not. That Church is the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee. It seems strange because they have historically been very outspoken for years on Gay and Lesbian issues. It is one of the few domination's to ordain openly gay and lesbian clergy. Much longer than any other domination as far as I know. So what is the problem?

I think it is time that Push comes to Shove. Don't you think?

More Juicy Drama at the Leather Bars

Oh I love this the Drama never ends. Rumors are flying that the Harabor Room has closed. Not exactly true, boys and girls. As some of you may have heard Mick Engebritson an Agent for the Harbor Room Corporation died of a massive heart attack leaving the other partner in the corporation Fitz. Of course as you know there is fearce competition between certain Leather Bars, one in particular comes to mind which my sources allege may be the cause of the current debacle. Three guesses and the first two don't count. Anyway I present to you a letter that Fitz sent out explaining the the problem.

UPDATE So, What’s Going On?
Hello All!
So what is going on over there at that Harbor Room anyways? I heard the Harbor Room is closed down. I heard the police came in and closed the bar. There are so many rumors, so here goes. Harbor Room started with two people who formed a corporation to open this bar. Those two people are none other than Mick Engebritson and myself Gregg. Mick was our “agent” for the corporation, and I have been the owner of the corporation and the building. All has been well for our 7 years now and have never had a run in with the law. And we have been blessed to have a great group of customers who I would prefer to call Friends. Then two weeks ago, Mick was struck by a massive heart attack that took him by surprise and without warning at the young age of 53. Last Saturday I had a chance to see so many of you who attended the reception here at the Harbor Room following Mick’s wake.
But going back before his wake I promptly went to city hall to rectify the matter of our license in the light of Mick’s passing. After a few hours of paperwork and appointment of a new agent to the corporation in the Milwaukee Licensing Division’s offices, we were good to go and on our way. The kind people at city hall gave us the forms, we took oaths, got notarized and even wrote them a healthy check and got a receipt.
Then earlier this week, many of you came in and said, hmmmmmmmm! I heard a rumor over at ________from_______that you lost your license. Well, we said it wasn’t so. Then the Milwaukee Police Department claimed to get an ANNOYMOUS TIP that our license was not valid. Well, anytime a tip is recieved, it simply must be investigated! The Milwaukee Police Department arrived here on Friday at 6:10 p.m. to review our license. They took down the information from us and compared it to what they had in their on line computer listing. Bingo, no match. The new appointment had not been processed and is not in their computer. But in fact the Liquor Specialist in the Licensing Division of City Hall had us fill out an entirely wrong form. It was to be a TRANSFER of LICENSE due to Death of the Licensee not the regular Renewal of Liquor License with an appointment of a new agent. That form was coming due too, so no harm done there really, other than the mistake has resulted in the city closing our establishment. That being said, I will simply enclose here exchanges between the aldermen, the police dept for your edification!

Re: Closure of Harbor Room by Milwaukee Police Department
Hello Alderman Witkowiak,
This is the form the License Division should have given us. When I went in, I specifically asked for Patricia Profitt, however we were steered to one of her “Liquor Specialists.” That specialist had us fill out the entire new form AT 115 instead of this Transfer. We being myself, the liquor specialist, my new agent appointment and Patricia all spoke about Myron’s death and his upcoming funeral. No one however brought up anything about this form AT 108 that I found on line by going through Google. We went as far as proceeding to the Treasurer and paying $ 1,104.00 that otherwise would not have been due until the time of renewal being July 24, 2007. It says there is no charge for a transfer in the case of death.
The police never did return Friday evening. We waited until 9:45 and then contacted the police department to check on the status of our call that was placed at 7:30 p.m. When they checked, I was informed there was NO PENDING STATUS and that no call had been placed to the Police Department.
In inquiring further, I did in fact get the police department to admit that someone was indeed here for the purpose of checking our license. I asked to speak to someone and was told that “they were out doing tavern license checks, and they were with the State Bar Man.” This unit had not returned to the station and did not know when they would return after doing their “tavern license checks.” I told by the officer, that we were told by the officer that came to our establishment said, “They were responding to an anonymous tip that we did not have a license.” He replied “that was not true.” The only further information he would provide was that it was “Squad 2 G.”

This is just to inform you that I have already met with the shift captain of District Two Milwaukee Police Department. I provided them with all of our licenses, the AT 115, the receipts, and the Transfer Form that should have been provided and or completed when we came to city hall to take care of this matter on May 2nd. They agreed we did everything in a prompt and orderly fashion but they could not allow us to open because a new license has not shown up in their on-line computer system. When that transfer is approved by City Hall and it appears on their computer, they said we may go ahead and reopen. Until then they said nothing could be done and that “not even the Chief of Police could give us the approval to operate.” Because of my business partner, Myron Engebritson’s sudden death, the license for the business is simply invalid.
And in Reply from our fine Alderman, and I do mean that, this seems to be one very nice and sincere gentleman. And I ain’t blowin’ no smoke!
Gregg,We will try and get to the bottom of this first thing Mon. am through lic. div..Call 286 2861 and speak with Mike McGuire; he is my Lesislative Assistant. Tell him that you sent a e-mail in with the info and ask him to confrence with either Rebecca Barron or Richard Pfaff in Lic. Div. and see what it will take to get this all fixed. Call McGuire at aprox 8:30 am on monday.He will do what he can and keep me in the loop.

So, how does that all line up with what you have heard? LOL. At least you are receiving your information directly from me at the Harbor Room as to clear up any RUMORS you have been told. Some people are really enjoying this I am sure. That is fine. That’s also real life. I worry more about what you think of us here at Harbor Room, and the fine reputation and trust we have built over the years with our friends and patrons. So I want you to know what is really going on.
Of course I could write more! I’ve never been short of words. But Harbor Room is still here. It will remain to be here. In fact, what could be better! Watch for our Grand Re-Opening Celebrations! People say I don’t advertise, LOL! I don’t need too! Bad Press is Better Than No Press At ALL!

One suggestion I will make if Fitz is reading this. When dealing with Government officials, put everything in Writing. Send a certified letter, return reciept required verifying your conversation/s. If you email require a Reeturn reciept to verify that the intended person got the email and by all means make hard copies for your files. Another thing and I know they don't like this but get yourself a small electronic pocket recorder, turn it on, stick it in your shirt pocket and record the conversastion. It may not be used in court as evidence but you can make some pretty accurate notes from it afterwords. Get the names of everyone you talk to right away and never send anything by regular mail or email. That is taken from over thirty years as a landlord.

To the competition. You're still not the only show in town. You are not doing too well either seeing as your license is comming up the end of this month. Hint Hint.

Wanna do some Country?

How many of you remember 3B's and
Country Line Dancing?
Those were the days when you'd get all dressed up in jeans plaid shirt or blouse, Cowboy Boots and hunker on down to 3B's for a night of line dancing and fun. B's closed and moved to 2nd Street and so did the dancers and from there they moved over the years to different places. After a while we lost track of where they were meeting or when. Interest faded and so did the Cowboy fad. Some however never lost interest and continued to line dance right up until now.
Boy have I got news for you. There is a place with a huge dance floor where there is Country Line dancing and lessons. The place is Hot Water located at the very end of National Avenue on Water Street. 818 So. Water Street to be exact. It is a mixed bar offering different themes each day of the week and caters to all who like to dance, gay and straight. Friday is Country from 8:00 pm till bar close with free lessons from 8;30 to 9:15 pm. Our own Shoreline are the ones who dance and teach. There is a free parking in the lot north of the building. Kiddy corner from them is Kruz the old So Water Street Docks.
Wednesday is Disco on the 1st and 3rd and West Coast Swing on the 2nd and 4th., Thursday is East Coast Swing, Friday is Country, Saturday is Salsa and Sunday is Tango 3:15 to 9:30 pm and Comedy 9:30 to the last laugh.
So get on those duds and hunker on down to Hot Water on Friday night and join Shoreline for some good 'ol foot stompin fun.

Chocololic's Unite

If you are a chocoholic like I am you will be alarmed by the article in the Washington Post this morning. Chocolate Purists Alarmed by Proposal To Fudge Standards I read that as a direct assault on my palate. Every day I need a chocolate fix. Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, and even White Chocolate. I especially like Ambrosia Blue Ribbon Dark Chocolate. I for one will be really mad if they substitute some other "fat" in my chocolate. Its bad enough that you can't get your favorite cookies with Real Chocolate but some disgusting adulterated Fudge like covering that they dare to call chocolate.

In short I call all Chocoholics to unite and write or phone the Food and Drug Administration and protest. We want pure chocolate. It is a violation of our Constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness.

Brew City Bears Blame Game Begins

How interesting it is that after I resigned my position as Secretary (one I was not elected to but was asked to fill because of another resignation) that now I am blamed for the alleged gross mismanagement of its leaders for the impending demise of the club. Out of the kindness of my heart I even wrote a letter suggesting a way to get new members and let people know that they still existed. Essentially I suggested that they have a social night at one of the local watering holes and talk up the club as a social organization to drum up new members. This was met with resounding negative remarks. "That won't work. Nobody wants to do that." best of all they said that no one would participate. How pathetic.

Guys if you don't try, nothing is going to happen. For Pete's sake take Responsibility for what is happening.

This is one of the biggest problems in our society. No one wants to take responsibility for the mess they've gotten themselves into. It is much easier to seek out a scapegoat to blame all their problems on. It is the selfish "Me" attitude and the "I don't want to get involved" Let Joe do it that is the problem. Let us not forget "The Devil made me do it." In my opinion, pure horse dung.

Oh, by the way, what goes around comes around and it did. Don't think for one minute that I don't know what is happening out there. They don't call me The Hawk for nothing.

Pridefest and the Protesters

Every year it seems we go over the same things. Am I the only one who remembered to bring a tape recorder (actually a digital recorder) to record the meeting? Believe me it is much easier to review a tape later on to get all the facts straight.

the panelists were Maria Cadenas the moderator and director of the Cream City Foundation. Next was Cindy Odya-Weis aka Mama Q (Pflag), Jim Melotte (VPof the Pride Parade), Scott Gunkel (President of Pridefest) at the main table.

The first order of business was to have each person introduce themselves so that those in attendance knew who were attending and the amount of community representation we had.

A brief synopsis of the entertainment that would be performing at Pridefest during the weekend, the hours of operation and cost of tickets. Of concern was the need for cooperation between the Parade Sponsors and Pridefest organizers that we need to work together in order to provide a good experience for those patrons attending the festival and parade. Pridefest this year is making available large packets of tickets available for purchase at a good discount. Free entry will also be available each day with the donation of at least Four non-perishable food donations to the Food Pantry near the front gate. This is great for those with limited finances who would like to attend.

Several suggestions for the Pride Parade were made including shortening the route to increase or consolidate the crowd along the street. Another was to have the Parade on a different day in order to extend our Pride celebration into a week long celebration. It e idea is that the Parade would not be as much in competition with Pridefest and it may even discourage protesters or lessen the intensity.

The biggest discussion centered on the Protesters who it seems have changed their tactics and seem to be concentrating more on the parade than on protesting across from Pridefest. It was discussed that sensitivity training for the Police personnel who are assigned or volunteer to patrol at Pridefest would be necessary and help in delicate situations. Working with bar owners in obtaining permits extending the area in front for private use during the Parade would help curb the interference by protesters. Perhaps passing out flyer's about the protesters and what will and what will not be tolerated by the police. My suggestion is to ignore them like they don't exist and not say anything. Responding to them is what they want.

PFLAG is planning to have Cheerleaders and support and guidance for those people needing it during the Parade and around Pridefest.

Other topics that were discussed were the possibility of growing our celebration into a Pride Week instead of just a weekend. The impact of the Amendment on this years activities and recognition of the great work done by FORGE in their first national FTM/SOFFA conference held in Milwaukee.

Interweave meets tomprrow

Interweave the 1st UU LGBTIQ contingent of the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee will be meeting Tomorrow April 12th at 6:30 pm to continue their discussion of their strategic initiative and strategy for the upcoming year. I know that sounds a little uninteresting but it is not. What it really boils down to is a planning session for the upcoming year. They meet at the 1st Unitarian Society located at Astor and Ogden. If the door is locked, ring the bell and someone will let you in. Everyone from the Gay/straight community is invited to join in. With all the cruddy weather we are having, what better thing to do on a dismal Thursday evening? Come on down, have fun and meet some new friends. I plan to be there.

Eldon Murray Memorial

As many may know one of our elders passed away on March 5th 2007. About a week ago there was a memorial service for Eldon for members of our community. I got to know Eldon several years back as a member of SAGE at the time. In case you weren't able to attend I have posted some pictures here. I never reealized all that he did for us. Also my prevoius blog (La Garou) has the kinks tothe editorial and obituary. We'll miss you Eldon.

Whats going on with the Bears?

Perhaps some of you know and then perhaps you don't know that I have been involved with several local gay newspapers. First and foremost The Wisconsin Light and sporadically the InStep magazine. While in high school I was the school newspaper chief photographer. To say that photography and journalism or photojournalism is a passion would be an understatement.

Since moving here with my parents to Wisconsin I have been involved with all aspects of the LGBT community from Action Wisconsin to the Bear Club. Once again the journalistic bug has bitten and I have resigned from most organizations to pursue this passion. Which brings me to the question, Whats happening with the Bears?

First they lost their home bar then many members dropped out or have not renewed their membership. Late December elections for new officers were held and several positions remained vacant. Now it looks like they have suspended the By-Laws and upon defeating a motion to disband are contemplating the club's future. With only a third of the roster remaining, will they be able to recruit new members and breathe new life into the organization? Will they be able to regain their home bar? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Seeing as they have temporarily suspended the by-laws can women join too? After all there are Mama Bears and there are Papa Bears. Besides where do you think little Bears come from? Didn't their constitution say something about being a Social Club who welcomed Bears and their Admirers? I can tell you that I know some women who consider themselves Bears. I think they will be a great asset if the club lets them join. Personally I think we should end our internalized homophobia and join together as one big happy family. Lets get rid of the Boys Club mentality, that is so old. But will they do it? That is the question.
Can they pull it off? Lets wait and see.

La Fraternitie du Loup-Garou

The Leather Club for FTMs and their supporters was held at the HARBOR ROOM with a bar night and beer bust. Although it was raining pretty hard that evening the crowd was moderate and not too crowded which made for a interesting time. There were a nice mix of locals and some who had ventured up to Milwaukee's bar scene.

I don't know about anyone else but I had a good time meeting new people and engaging in dialogue with the members.

Forge Forward update

Well I made it to the Forge conference. It is at the Four points Sheraton at the corner of Layton Ave and Howell right by the General Mitchell International Airport. The parking lot is packed and the hotel is huge. Most of the conference is down the hall next to the restaurant. It is on two floors with conferences too numerous to mention. There is a vendor section which has all kinds of information on all kinds of transgender issues. It is very interesting and there are lots of people to meet and network with. It is estimated that there are over four hundred people attending the conference. I really hope that those who attended the conference has had a really good time.

Sage Spring Fling

La Garou at Forge conference this weekend

La Garou

Attention all you leather folks out there. La Garou a masculine Leather Group of FTM and SOFFA will be held at the FORGE Conference at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel by the airport this weekend March 30th to April 1st 2007. There will also be a Windy Moon Conclave held there along with a night at the Harbor Room on Saturday night. This would be a good time to meet some of our own and trade stories and who knows what else. (hint, hint for anyone bringing toys to play with?).
As a Leather person myself, I am looking forward to the event. I will be at the Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church booth on and off through out the weekend. I'm hoping to meet some friends, some of which I have lost contact with there also. I will be covering the conference all during the weekend and posting pictures of the events as they occur.
This should prove to be an interesting weekend. I'm looking forward to a very busy weekend.

On a slightly more somber note a memorial service will be held at the Washington Park Senior Center for our dear departed Eldon Murray on Saturday at 1 pm. The Milwaukee Journal had a very good write up on Eldon in the newspaper. Click Here for the Obiturary and here for the Article. Reguardless of how you feel about him, if it weren't for Eldon much of what we take for granted here is Wisconsin would not be. For this reason I urge all who knew him to attend.

St Patrick's Day

Here is what happened on St Patty's Day. First of all I went to the Sage celebration at their offices (basement meeting room). There were about 18 to 20 people in attendance. The theme of the party was an Ode to the venerable Potato with baked potatoes for everyone along with a variety of fixings. These were nice big Idaho potatoes and there were lots of them in a big Nesco Roaster. There were an assortment of veggies and dips. There was a green custard pie, brownies and chocolate cake with green frosting. Scattered across the tables were green foil covered chocolate Irish coins.
Song sheets were passed out and we attempted to sing several Irish songs. It would have been better if music were available to accompany us. I will say it was fun, off tune and all. What can I say? You had to be there.

Later on that evening I went out to see what might be going on in the Third Ward area. First I went to the new Pump House where the younger crowd were having a good time. After that I went to M's where a small crowd hung around. I was going to try a couple of other palces but there wasn't parking close enough. I paseed by the old M&M, now an Irish Pub which was packed wall to wall. I guess we don't celebrate that much like the straight people do. They get special days, we celebrate when ever we want to. After all I'm not too crazy about Amateur Night anyway. Hope y'all had a good weekend.

IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO A NICER GUY

Dr. Kennedy suffered a heart arrhythmia leading to cardiac arrest on Thursday, December 28. On Wednesday, January 3 he underwent a procedure to implant a pacemaker/defibrillator.
Worshipers at Fort Lauderdale's Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church offered prayers Sunday for the full recovery of the Rev. D. James Kennedy, the church's charismatic leader after he suffered a massive heart attack.
Kennedy, 76, a leading figure in the Christian conservative movement, was rushed to the hospital Thursday night after suffering the attack. His condition, initially seen as grave, has been showing improvement, church leaders told the congregation on Sunday.

Could this be God's vengeance for all the anti-gay venom he has been spouting against us? Is Karma finally catching up to him? I don't know but for some reason I have no sympathy for the man. That is too bad because I like him once upon a time. It wasn't until he decided to jump on the bandwagon along with the rest of the wingnuts and religious fanatics that I lost respect for him.
Don't get me wrong, I wish him a successful recovery, however I hope this is a wake up call for him and a sign that he must change his ways. God is shaking his finger at you Mr Kennedy. The next time you may go down for the count. Gods watching and I don't think he's too pleased with what is going on. He is telling you that he is still in charge and he isn't happy.

Eating out with Sage

On March 11 Senior Action in an Gay Invironment (SAGE) met at the Tazbah at about 5:30 pm for a nice sit down dinner. There was a selection pork, chicken or fish. There were fourteen people present. The dinner was hearty and the portions were generous. The appetizer was soup or salad. I had the salmon which was grilled to perfection. Others had boneless pork chops and some had the chicken which I think were good sized breasts of meat. It was topped off by piece of cake.

This comming Saturday SAGE will celebrate St Patties Day at the SAGE offices on north farwell. I hear they are going to serve authentic Irish fare along with fun for all. So if you want to celebrate, but don't care for the bar scene, this is a good event to go to. It will be from 1 to 5 pm and will honor the venerable "Irish Potato" SAGE will suply baked potatoes along with various toppings. Bring something to share if you can something green would be nice. I hope to see you there.

Castaways Beer Bust at Kruz

Last Sunday from 3 pm to 7 pm the Castaways had their Beer Bust. I came at a little after three and the bar was starting to get crowded. By the time I left at about 5 pm the bar was crowded. There were raffles and some nice prizes were won by various patrons. Kruz is where the old South Water Street Docks used to be. The bartenders are a friendly bunch. They have a internet jukebox that plays almost any tune you can think of. There is a out side patio with a tent conopy and heater for those cold Wisconsin nights. I hear that one of the bartenders signs for those of you with hearing imparment. Looks like the Leather sceme is alive ald well in Milwaukee.

Visiting Interweave

Having been a member of the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee some time ago but still keeping in contact I decided along with a friend to go to the UU Interweave meeting last night. The church has worked hard to become a welcoming congregation to all LGBTIQ people. This was a planning session for the upcoming year to focus on the direction Interweave wants to take.
We discussed about a dozen different topics that we felt that needed to be addressed. After much discussion, the top twelve items were written down on large sheets of paper and the members were instructed to choose three most important topics that need to be addressed. The rest were designated as medium or long range goals that will be addressed sometime in the future. Since most of what Interweave has done seems to be centered on Social Justice issues, it was agreed that perhaps it would be better for us to change from a Special Interest Group to a Social Justice Group because the focus seems to have turned to more civil rights issues for LGBTIQ people within the community.
Beyond that the two co-chairs will be ending their tenure and they are looking for volunteers to step up to the plate. If anyone is interested contact the current leaders and express an interest. I'm sure it will be an interesting and rewarding experience.
The next scheduled meeting will be on April 12 at 6:30 pm. 1st UU at Astor and Ogden. Hope to see you there.

Update on the Leather Bar Arrests

The curious person that i am, I obtained the Police report of the incident that I mentioned below. Four guys were arrested for Lewd and Lascivious behavior. They posted bail and are scheduled to be tried just after the Real April Fools Day (April 15) . So far they are free on bond and whether they will have to serve any time or if they will be fined won't be known until then.

So what is the moral of the story? I'll say this. Its OK to cruise the gay bars and pick up a new trick but don't let lust get the better of you. Keep your zipper up and take him home or wherever and then do him in private. Yes indeed the cops do visit the bars and they will arrest you if you misbehave. I hope you get my drift. Have a good time and stay out of jail. That is no fun at all.

In the meantime I'll keep you posted as to the fate of our friends. Thats all for now.

Eldon Murray passes away

Another one of Milwaukee's Gay leaders has passed away on March 5th 2007 after suffering a heart attack. The first I heard was that he was at Veterans Hospital and it sounded as though he was recuperating. To find out more here is the link to the Cream City Foundation website. For more information. Sage had an article about him in their newsletter. This is a sad day for our community. We have lost three of our elders this year so far. Lets hope there are no more passings. Please check the newspapers for the death notice and funeral arrangements.

4 Arrested at Leather Bar

One of Milwaukee's well known Leather Bars was the target of an under-cover sting. In the early morning of February 1st two under cover officers visited the back room of this notorious hangout and arrested four men engaged in lewd acts of misbehavior. The owner, according to the police report "entered the back room area twice, approached the men but did nothing to discourage or stop this activity." the men acknowledged him on both accasions but did not stop theor activity. Needles to say they were taken into custody.
I have vistied the bar in question on many occasions and observed similar activity. Guys if you want to have some place to meet you are going to have to keep your zippers up and take your libedos elsewhere. I understand the excitement and thrill of possibly getting caught, which unfortunately was not the case. Is losing you job and reputation worth it? I don't think so. Not only that, you now have a permanent police record.
The fact is that we are losing bars due to the gentrification of the Third Ward but lets not make it even harder for the owners of these establishments to keep their licenses. So lets behave ourselves and take it to the streets. If you got to do it take him home or whatever.

Here's the Dish on the Predefest Town Hall

Last Thursday February 15^th Pride Fest held their Town Hall Meeting at the LGBT Community Center on Court St at 7 pm. Some found out about the meeting by email and others found out about it through ads in the local gay rags. The headline said “Help build Wisconsin’s largest pride celebration” which turned out to be more of an informational meeting than anything else.

Yours truly was looking for answers to questions as to whether Pride Fest would reinvent the wheel again this year. Apparently so as Scott Gunkel is now the spokesman and a mostly new Board has been formed. They are Paul Masterson of the Gay Arts Center fame and Paul Williams along with Pete Mins as Co-Director replacing the departing Mike Hall who had been recalled to active duty you know where. Sam Christianson (Proud Crowd), Dan, David Boda (Community out reach) and Jef Montoya (religious activities). Still needed is a Female Co-Director. Strange that there isn’t some kick-ass Lesbian who wants to come forward.

Yup its going to be three days, and yeah they are hoping to keep the Ticket price at $12 given that the cost of things like insurance and entertainment doesn’t keep rising. Talking about figures, they claim that we had a record attendance of 23,839 people, they claim to be the largest crowd so far. Neil Albrecht the new treasurer said that they raised $441,207 of which expenses were $439,301 giving a grand total of $1905.99 Whoop te doo.

The final debt reduction payoff of $31,774 along with a total contribution to the community of $10,000 came off the revenue. Don’t ask me how they came up with this figure but they claimed revenue of $85,000. Math is not one of my strong points so don’t ask me what that means. You’ll have top ask them. They said that they now only have to put a $3,000 down payment to reserve the festival grounds and and about $28 to $30 grand just before the festival to get things going. At least that is the way I understand it. They are shooting for 25% profit, whatever that means.

As usual they don’t have a Volunteer Coordinator and they are shooting for March to either get one or get the ball rolling on recruiting volunteers for the various positions needed. Lets hope they can get someone soon as I suspect that it will be business as usual scrambling to get negotiations done on time.

Now for the juicy part. There will no longer be any flags down Wisconsin Avenue. Not just us but every festival too, courtesy of our glorious budget cutting County Executive. Oh and you’ll love this one. No more shuttle service to Pride Fest either, unless someone can schmooze someone in city or county government to provide those nice Trolleys. As we all know parking is atrocious anywhere close to the Summerfest grounds and so is the cost. If you ask me, someone is going to have to come up with a plan soon or there will be Hell to pay especially those who are disabled. Besides who wants to maneuver past those annoying protesters who perennially gather on the corner as you enter the Fest? They didn’t do too well with the Pride Guide and they are thinking about eliminating it or making it much smaller. Personally I think it would be a major marketing blunder if they did away with it. Smaller is ok. We really don’t need something like a magazine, just something like they do at State Fair with the weeks calendar of activities. A three day one should be breeze and can be filled with ads to fluff it out. It also needs to be made to be stuck in the back pocket comfortably, that’s all.

At the end suggestions were made about filling vacant time on the main stage. Cooperating with the Parade and the possibility of moving to a warmer weekend which is not possible for the foreseeable future. It is something nice to look forward to if the opportunity arises. Did I tell you it was in the basement? Not exactly the warmest place in the world.

Do I have the Dish for You

In case you didn't know, one of our own is off to Kuwait and possibly maybe even into Iraq. Not his choice mind you and what he told me was that it may be at least two years and possibly three. Now that is a real bummer because his enlistment in the Reserves was supposed to end in two years. He had a going away party at one of our watering holes. Worried about his mortality he joined MMCC and is off to battle. I know that this has to be quiet but the silence is deafening. Just to give you a little hint, he was Co-Producer for Pride Fest.
Speaking of Pride Fest, I wonder what they plan to do in his absence? Two to three years is a long time to be away. My question is, will the replacement be temporary as it should be? Word is that they have already found a replacement. Not even a word on the website about his departure and no mention that they are looking for a replacement either. I don't know about you but that just doesn't sound right. Are they going to do a search for his temporary replacement or appoint an interim Co-Producer until a suitable substitute replacement can be found?
Shouldn't we be honoring our men and women in uniform who have served and are serving our country? How about those who lost their lives and limb? Wouldn't it be fitting that we honor them during Pride Fest?
